Japanese Wartime Lacquer Tray – China Incident Commemorative This is a Japanese commemorative lacquerware tray dating from the prewar or wartime period. The front features striking military imagery including a Rising Sun flag, a map of China, military helmets, flowers, and a five-pointed star. At the top are the Japanese words China Incident Commemoration. ” The “China Incident was the term commonly used in Japan at the time for the conflict with China that began in 1937 and developed into the Second Sino-Japanese War. Another inscription reads “Jinchu Hokoku” – Devote one’s loyalty in service to the nation. This phrase was widely used in wartime Japan and reflected the strong emphasis placed on loyalty, duty, and national service. Japanese Lacquerware Japan has a centuries-old tradition of fine lacquerware. Japanese lacquer pieces are admired for their deep glossy surfaces, durability, careful craftsmanship, and decorative techniques developed over generations. What makes this tray especially interesting is the combination of traditional Japanese decorative craftsmanship with unmistakably wartime imagery. It shows how military culture was not confined to uniforms, weapons, or the battlefield. It also entered ordinary objects used and displayed in Japanese homes. The Name “Sasamoto” The reverse is marked “Sasamoto” in Japanese. Although its exact meaning cannot be confirmed, the manner in which it is written suggests that it may be the name of the original owner rather than a maker’s mark. If so, it gives this piece an additional human connection – a wartime object once kept in the home of a person or family named Sasamoto. Condition There are scratches, surface wear, staining, and some losses around the edges consistent with age. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition. The General Sir John Maxwell Personal Black Watch & Coldstream Guards Photo Archive Museum-Grade 5-Piece Unframed Estate Lot – Original Presentation Plaque & Printed Mat Elements. Condition & Conservation Summary This lot is offered in salvaged, antique condition as an ideal restoration project. The four central photographic prints are remarkably crisp, maintaining strong charcoal tones, deep contrast, and sharp detail. The heavy estate cardboard matting shows prominent, historical water staining, foxing, and peripheral tidelines from storage as pictured. However, because the text blocks, names, and General Maxwell’s central seating positions are completely clear, these items can be easily trimmed, custom overlay-matted, and beautifully restored. This is a remarkable commemorative lacquer tray associated with the 2nd Railway Regiment of the Imperial Japanese Army. On the left side of the tray, the unit name is clearly written in Japanese: “2nd Railway Regiment” The center features a large Imperial Japanese Army Rising Sun flag surrounded by cherry blossoms, with an Army star and a unit-related emblem above. Unlike ordinary infantry units, railway regiments were specialized technical units responsible for constructing, repairing, maintaining, and operating military railways. Their work made it possible to move troops, weapons, ammunition, food, and other supplies across long distances. The history of the 2nd Railway Regiment reaches back to 1908, when its predecessor unit was established at Tsudanuma in Chiba Prefecture. It was reorganized as the 2nd Railway Regiment in 1918. Its history crossed several major events in modern Japan. After the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the unit participated in railway reconstruction work. In 1928, it was deployed during the Jinan Incident in China. Following the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, the regiment operated railways in North China and also participated in the Xuzhou Campaign. It later served in Manchuria and North China. Near the end of World War II, in 1945, the main body of the regiment was transferred to Sasebo in Kyushu, where it helped protect Japanese National Railways steam locomotives and railway operations. The regiment ended the war in Kyushu. In other words, the name preserved on this tray belonged to a unit whose history stretched from disaster relief and railway reconstruction in Japan to military railway operations on the Asian continent and finally the defense of Japan itself. The tray is also a beautiful example of the way traditional Japanese decorative arts were incorporated into military commemorative objects. The vivid vermilion surface, gold-colored border, cherry blossoms and elaborate flag design reflect the decorative tradition of Japanese lacquerware. Lacquerware had long been valued in Japan not only as practical tableware but also for ceremonial, presentation and commemorative purposes. This combination of military history, railway history and traditional Japanese craftsmanship makes the piece particularly interesting. Age-related scratches and wear are visible, especially on the reverse and around the edges, but the principal decoration and the inscription identifying the 2nd Railway Regiment remain clearly visible. Rather than representing only the men who fought at the front, this tray tells the story of the technical soldiers who built, repaired and operated the railways that kept an army moving. This is an original Imperial Japanese Navy ceremonial sake cup, produced during the Taisho to early Showa period (circa 1910s-1930s). The cup was presented to a Navy serviceman to commemorate the successful completion of his full term of military service. The following characters are written inside the cup in gold. (Imperial Japanese Navy). (Completion of service / full term). (“Otake” – a personal name). The presence of a personal name strongly suggests this cup was awarded to an individual sailor, making it more desirable than generic commemorative pieces. The interior features a classic Imperial Japanese Navy motif. Anchor – symbol of the Navy. Rising Sun flag – official national and military emblem of the period. Cherry blossom in gold gilt – representing honor, duty, and the fleeting nature of life. This combination is widely recognized as a formal Navy discharge commemorative design. Why Imperial Japanese Navy Items Are Rare. Compared to the Army, the Imperial Japanese Navy maintained only about one-tenth of the personnel strength.
