BAYONET, Finnish, M28-30
The Finnish Civil Guard designed sword bayonets for its M28 and M28-30 rifles. The first M28 bayonet is similar to the M27; so similar that they are basically identical. The only differences are internal. The second Civil Guard bayonet, for the M28-30 rifle, was left in the white. The fancy wooden bolsters are made of curly birch. The bayonet had a re-designed blade with grip panels attached with screw type fasteners, as opposed to the rivets on earlier bayonets. This made repairs much easier, using a special tool. A fluted steel scabbard had been issued with the bayonet but proved to be unsuitable. It got replaced with new blued smooth steel scabbard. A cleaning / oiling hole was added to the pommel. The M28-30 bayonet was manufactured by both Hackman & Co and Fiskars between 1934 – 1939; producing about 28,000 bayonets. Manufactured by Hackman, and so marked on the ricasso. It comes in a smooth scabbard, and has a bright blade. The Civil Guard markings “SKY” and “-S-” acceptance stamps are stamped on the ricasso and cross guard. Finnish manufacturers delivered only about 130,000 sword style bayonets to their Army and Civil Guard by 1945. Compare that to the MILLIONS of bayonets produced for the Mauser/Enfield/Mosin Nagant families of rifles! These Finnish bayonets are considered rare, and getting more so with time. Bayonet for Finnish M28 rifle. Manufactured by Hackman, and so marked on the ricasso. It comes in a fluted scabbard, and has a bright blade with only a few few very minor stained spots. This bayonet was issued to the Civil Guard, as evidenced by the Civil Guard acceptance stamp =S= on the cross guard. The serial number 74770 is stamped on the bottom of the tang. The number 92 is stamped on the pomell. While the blade was left in the white, the bayonet was blued (now a faded grey) from the cross guard to the pomell. The Finnish maker, HACKMAN, Made only 38,200 of these. In fact, Finnish manufacturers delivered only about 130,000 sword style bayonets to their Army and Civil Guard by 1945. Bayonet for Finnish M27 rifle. Manufactured by Hackman, and so marked on the ricasso. It comes in a fluted scabbard, and has a bright blade with only a few few very minor stained spots. This is likely an Army bayonet as it lacks any Civil Guard markings or acceptance stamps. The serial number 57431 is stamped on the top of the tang. The left scale/bolster, has what at first appear to be chips around the rivets. They are actually dark stains in two minor wear points in the wood. The Finnish maker, HACKMAN, Made only 10,500 of these. In fact, Finnish manufacturers delivered only about 130,000 sword style bayonets to their Army and Civil Guard by 1945. Compare that to the MILLIONS of bayonets produced for the Mauser/Enfield/Mosin Nagant families of rifles! These Finnish bayonets are considered rare, and getting more so with time. Please see pics for condition. American Fork & Hoe. Fair amount of sharpening edge wear. Knife bayonet for use on the. Designed by John Garand. Also used on the caliber. In 1942, the Cavalry Board recommended experimenting with a shorter blade of 10 inches. M1905 bayonets were cut down to 10 inches and designated M1905E1. 16-inch M3 scabbards were also shortened to M7 length. The shorter blade was found to be highly satisfactory and was adopted as standard in early 1943, designated Bayonet M1. The item “US M1 Bayonet.
