Own a Piece of History. This is a rare and heavy commemorative lion-shaped inkstand presented after the Shanghai Incident of 1932 (Showa 7). Engraved on the underside are. “Shanghai Incident Victory Return Commemoration”. “Imperial Military Reservists Association – Tetsusei Ironworks Joint Branch”. This confirms that the piece was a non-commercial presentation item connected to the Imperial Japanese military veteran community. What Was the Shanghai Incident? The Shanghai Incident was a major military conflict fought in Shanghai, China, in 1932 between Japanese and Chinese forces. It is considered one of the important precursors to the later Second Sino-Japanese War. At the time, the battle was heavily reported in Japan, and returning soldiers were celebrated as national heroes. As a result, commemorative presentation items such as this were created for veterans and military-related organizations. What Was the Imperial Military Reservists Association? The Imperial Military Reservists Association (Teikoku Zaigo Gunjinkai) was a massive nationwide organization composed mainly of reserve and retired military personnel. It was not simply a veterans club. It played a major role in connecting local communities with the Japanese military before WWII. Because of this, surviving presentation items from these organizations are deeply tied to the militarization and social atmosphere of prewar Japan. What Is an Inkstand? An inkstand was a desk accessory used during the fountain pen and dip-pen era. Glass ink bottles were originally placed into the two side compartments, while military officers, bureaucrats, teachers, and administrators used them to write official documents. In military environments of the 1930s, countless orders, reports, operational records, and training documents were written by hand. Because of this, an inkstand like this symbolized the military desk itself – the place where commands and records were created. This makes the piece more than simple deskware. It is effectively a military presentation object connected to wartime administration and veteran culture. The central lion sculpture symbolizes power, victory, and military prestige. Lion motifs were frequently used in Japanese military commemorative art during the early Showa era, especially for victory memorials and presentation trophies. This one was awarded to the 507th Coast Artillery (AA) For Outstanding Performance In The Coast Artillery Corps 1934. The brass portion was made by GORHAM. I don’t know much about the history of this award. The Coast Artillery formed in 1901 and ended in 1950. I was told these awards began around 1932. I’d be willing to bet none were presented after 1941. During certain years, more than one award was given. I believe two were awarded in 1934. This plaque was presented by Colonel Wilson the 7th Corps Chief of Staff and awarded to the 507th. The 507th CO and XO had their name plates added to the bottom of this plaque. The plaque came from the estate of the CO’s family. Thanks to a good friend, he found a news article from the Des Moines Tribune showing Colonel Wilson presenting this EXACT plaque. I could find only one plaque known to exist. It is in a New York museum. It is shown as belonging to the Old Guard of The City of New York and was presented to the 244th Coast Artillery T. You can see the pictures online. The wood portion of my plaque measures 23 1/2 inches tall, 19 1/4 inches wide and 5/8 inches thick. The bronze portion measures 19 3/4 inches tall, 14 1/4 inches wide and 5/16 inch thick. The entire piece weighs just under 16 pounds. I found some information on the 507th: 507th Coast Artillery (AA) Regiment (SM) Constituted in OR 7-29-21 as 507th Arty, CAC, and allotted to the Seventh Corps Area. Des Moines, IA, March 1922. Redesignated 507th CA (AA) 1924. Withdrawn from OR 8-18-33 and allotted to the RA as an inactive unit. Moved to Minneapolis 9-30-40. Redesignated 507th CA (AA) Regt (SM) 5-9-42 and activated (less Btry I) 8-1-42 at Cp. Reorganized 10-10-42 as 507th CA (AA) Regt (Mobile). Moved to North Long Beach, CA, 1-20-43 to establish AA positions. HHB redesignated HHB, 507th AAA Gp; 1st Bn redesignated 220th AAA (Gun) Bn; 2nd Bn redesignated 643rd AAA (AW) Bn; 3rd Bn redesignated 367th AAA (SL) Bn. This is an extremely rare, early 1930s Adolph Hitler Wall Bust. It is one of the more sought after busts, as it’s heavier bronze with much more detail than others. This item was brought home from American GI in World War II. His other trophies are available for sale on my page as well.

Vintage 1930s to mid 1940s Second Sino Japanese War Kaikosha Officers Club Tiger War Trophy Statue. Identified Chinese soldier recipient and identified Japanese Unit. This is an example of a piece of forgotten/unspoken history from Japan. This was given from the Japanese Kaikosha to deserving individuals for their contributions to the war effort against the Chinese. This one was thought to be given for efforts during the occupation and seizing of Manchuria. This was determined by the actions of the unit identified on the chest of the tiger. Empire of Japan’s Kwantung Army invaded Manchuria on 18 September 1931, immediately following the Mukden Incident. This item was found in US Navy veterans estate after his death. I want to dispell some inconsistency people try to say about these items; the main one being that these came in pairs. This is 100% false. These were made for specific individuals and were singular items commemorating acts for Japan. These again are EXTREMELY Rare!!! ORIGINAL UNITED STATES 1938 DOGS OF WAR NATIONAL MATCH TROPHY MEDAL. In an effort to increase military marksmanship and preparedness in the defense of the Nation, legislation was developed in 1903 to hold national marksmanship matches. This legislation was authorized by Congress in Army General Order #61. The teams representing all branches of the military were competing for the trophy called Dogs of War. The first matches were held at Sea Girt, NJ in 1903, followed by Ft Riley, KS, in 1904. In 1906, Camp Perry, OH, named in honor of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, became the home of the National Matches. Osburn medaled in these events multiple times. Obverse is a depiction of “The Dogs of War” with a man holding dogs on leashes. The proper left has a National Seal medal with tabs below depicting Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and National Guard. The proper right text reads National Trophy Presented by the Congress of the United States for Excellence in Team Marksmanship MDCCCCIV. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you!

1930 US Army Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club Colonels Cup Named Trophy. It measures 12.5 inches tall and is named to a D. It looks to be silver plated, is tarnished, dented in a few spots and has what looks like and old repair is a small spot. Still a rare trophy and still displays great. Army Chemical Warfare Trophy. It’s also referenced as the Chemical Warfare Service Trophy, and was awarded to top marksman in short-lived competition that involved firing from 200 yards with their service-issued gas masks on in a timed event. This is one of the more striking, unique, and hands down rare badges issued by the Army… It was made by Bailey, Banks & Biddle of Philadelphia, PA and is marked twice with their makers marks and Bronze. It’s unknown how many were ever awarded in its short, eight-year lifespan, but it’s estimated less than 10 were awarded annually. It’s likely only a small handful exist over 90 years later, and this is only the second to surface for sale in the past decade. It’s a larger badge, and measures 2 1/8 across. It is guaranteed original, authentic, and in exceptional original condition as shown. This piece is a holy grail piece for many Competition Shooting Badge collectors, and is museum collection worthy. There are absolutely no issues with this badge… It’s uncleaned, the pin mechanism works, and the makers marks and details are sharp throughout.
