Engraved on the underside are. “Shanghai Incident Victory Return Commemoration”. “Imperial Military Reservists Association – Tetsusei Ironworks Joint Branch”. This confirms that the piece was a non-commercial presentation item connected to the Imperial Japanese military veteran community. What Was the Shanghai Incident? The Shanghai Incident was a major military conflict fought in Shanghai, China, in 1932 between Japanese and Chinese forces. It is considered one of the important precursors to the later Second Sino-Japanese War. At the time, the battle was heavily reported in Japan, and returning soldiers were celebrated as national heroes. As a result, commemorative presentation items such as this were created for veterans and military-related organizations. What Was the Imperial Military Reservists Association? The Imperial Military Reservists Association (Teikoku Zaigo Gunjinkai) was a massive nationwide organization composed mainly of reserve and retired military personnel. It was not simply a veterans club. It played a major role in connecting local communities with the Japanese military before WWII. Because of this, surviving presentation items from these organizations are deeply tied to the militarization and social atmosphere of prewar Japan. What Is an Inkstand? An inkstand was a desk accessory used during the fountain pen and dip-pen era. Glass ink bottles were originally placed into the two side compartments, while military officers, bureaucrats, teachers, and administrators used them to write official documents. In military environments of the 1930s, countless orders, reports, operational records, and training documents were written by hand. Because of this, an inkstand like this symbolized the military desk itself – the place where commands and records were created. This makes the piece more than simple deskware. It is effectively a military presentation object connected to wartime administration and veteran culture. The central lion sculpture symbolizes power, victory, and military prestige. Lion motifs were frequently used in Japanese military commemorative art during the early Showa era, especially for victory memorials and presentation trophies. The underside is decorated with an intricate traditional Japanese “Sayagata” geometric pattern, a historic symbol representing continuity and eternal prosperity. The craftsmanship and weight are exceptional, giving the piece a true early Showa presence. This is not merely an inkstand. This is an original WWII Imperial Japanese “Discharge Commemorative” lacquer tray from the Manchuria Independent Garrison Unit. 30.5 × 21.5 cm. The tray features the Japanese national flag, the flag of Manchukuo, a military helmet, cherry blossoms, and crossed rifles. The center inscription reads. “Manchuria Independent Garrison Unit”. The Manchuria Independent Garrison Unit was a highly important military force responsible for protecting the South Manchuria Railway (Mantetsu), railway stations, bridges, and strategic facilities throughout Manchukuo. These troops were deeply connected to Japan’s control over Manchuria and served on the front line of the Japanese Empire’s continental expansion policy. During the 1930s-1945 period, they carried out security operations, anti-guerrilla activities, and military patrols across Manchuria. When the Soviet invasion of Manchuria began in August 1945, many of these units were overwhelmed and effectively disappeared during the collapse of Japanese control in the region. Because of this history, authentic artifacts related to the Manchuria Independent Garrison Unit are extremely scarce today. Especially rare are personalized discharge commemorative items like this example, which were privately owned rather than mass-issued military equipment. This is unquestionably a genuine wartime item. One particularly fascinating feature is the combination of the Japanese flag and the Manchukuo flag displayed side by side. This reflects the wartime ideology of “Japan-Manchukuo unity” and strongly captures the atmosphere of Imperial Japan’s presence in Manchuria. The reverse side bears the name “Yano” , which was likely the original owner – possibly the actual soldier who completed his military service and brought this tray home after serving in Manchuria. That personal connection gives the piece far more emotional and historical depth than an ordinary military souvenir. The tray itself is also a fine example of traditional Japanese lacquer craftsmanship. Even during wartime, Japanese commemorative objects often combined military symbolism with refined decorative artistry, and this piece beautifully reflects that tradition. The blade is alone is approximately 18 inches, and 30 inches overall including scabbard. It remains in very good original condition as pictured. Imperial German Army Veteran WW1 flag WW2 officer Knight Iron Cross honor banner. Here is your chance to own an incredible flag from a World War 1 Veteran’s organization. This thing is stunning and the stitch-work on this gem is outstanding. Chain-stitched motif and Iron Cross designs on both sides. Of the highest quality and produced on silk with a fringed border. There are two metal clips at either end for hanging. Measures roughly 50″ x 44″ including the fringe. Minor flaws and tears in the silk as can be seen in the photos and overall this piece is extremely fragile. There are some modern clips which were added so the flag could be displayed and hung but these can be taken off if so desired. To find something like this that survived is nothing short of a miracle.
