This is a rare large-format pictorial album titled “Manchukuo Founding and the Shanghai Incident”, published in 1932 (Showa 7) by Yokohama Trading News Co. It features numerous original photographs, maps, and calligraphy, documenting the turbulent events in East Asia during the early 1930s. Following the Mukden Incident (September 1931), the Japanese Kwantung Army occupied Manchuria. In March 1932, the puppet state of Manchukuo was proclaimed with the last Qing emperor Puyi as its head of state. For Japan, Manchukuo became both an economic and military stronghold, while the international community strongly criticized it as illegitimate, leading to Japan’s growing isolation in world affairs. In January 1932, hostilities broke out in Shanghai between Japanese and Chinese forces. Intense urban combat followed, including the deployment of Japanese Navy Special Landing Forces. After months of fighting, a ceasefire was signed in May. The scale and violence of the conflict marked a deep escalation in Sino-Japanese tensions. Showa 7 (1932) – A Turning Point. An original silver gelatin photograph circa 1934 of Peking and Shanghai Marines and other members of International Legations (British, French and Italian). Third from the right (lower right) is the post adjutant and morale officer of Headquarters Detachment, American Legation, Peking, China, Evans F. Seen wearing the Navy Cross for his actions in Nicaragua in 1930. In 1942, he and his “Raiders” were on Makin Island (second Navy Cross) and was later leading the famed “Long Patrol” on Guadalcanal. Carlson is arguably the father of Marine Special Operations. Photo appears to be the participants of the International Small Bore Rifle Competition and what looks like the international commanders. Rixey, the Legation Commanding Officer is center, behind the Johnson Trophy. Here is where Carlson studied the Chinese language, he would return in 1937 and study Chinese guerrilla tactics and the Japanese and where was born the term “Gung-ho” that he used as the Raiders motto. 27 Press Photos 1932 China Shanghai Chapei Pre-WWII Occupation by Japanese. Nice lot of original press photos from early 1932, shortly after the Japanese began their brutal occupation of China. Most of them have the original paper captions- Many of the captions are torn off but theyre still present. A bunch of them show two images on one photo. One smaller photo has a bit of paper from another caption stuck to it but this could probably be removed. The very bottom photo might not be from China but it was with these when I got them. There are 8 photos at the bottom which are pasted on both sides of sheets of paper. Some photos are excellent others do have some wear/ missing corners. Really nice lot of ORIGINAL 1932 photos of one of the dark periods in China’s history. Most of them are 8X10 Includes some extra paper captions but I dont think any of the photos they belong with are here.
This is an original full size medal, not a reproduction. Changhai is french for Shanghai. Medal reads “Servir” and “Medaille de Changhai Concession Française” with L. The Medal was awarded for service during the Battle of Shanghai, 13 August to 26 November 1937 between Chinese and invading Japanese forces, especially in protecting members of the foreign communities present in the city.
