It documents military personnel, equipment, ceremonies, and local activities, providing a rare visual record of the pre-World War II Japanese Army. Following the Manchurian Incident of 1931, the Imperial Japanese Army entered a period of rapid expansion and military activity across East Asia. During this time, soldiers and officers often compiled personal or regimental photo albums to record training exercises, ceremonies, and daily life within their units. Albums containing large numbers of original photographs are particularly valuable to historians and collectors because they provide a continuous visual record of military organization, equipment, and regional deployment during the early 1930s. Examples documenting infantry regiments and military life in regional Japan, such as Yamagata, are relatively scarce and offer unique insight into the pre-World War II era of the Japanese military. Thank you for your interest. This is a set of seven large-format military group photographs, all believed to be related to the Independent Garrison 3rd Battalion stationed in Manchuria during the late Taisho to early Showa period (1920s-1930s). Several mounts include inscriptions such as. (Independent Garrison 3rd Battalion, Manchuria). Barracks and training grounds of units stationed in Manchuria. Large formation group photos of officers, NCOs, and enlisted men. Scenes that appear to show construction work, training, and ceremonial events. These photographs were reportedly commemorative prints distributed to soldiers who served in the unit, and examples of this size and completeness are seldom seen on the market today. During the late Taisho and early Showa years, Japan’s Kwantung Army expanded its influence across Manchuria, and many independent garrison units were deployed to secure railways, protect settlements, and maintain order. This period represents the rising tension that later developed into the Mukden Incident (1931) and the establishment of Manchukuo. For this reason, materials documenting small-unit structure, daily life, and on-site conditions in Manchuria hold strong research value for scholars of Japanese military history and Manchurian studies. The original mounts show age-related wear, but the photographs themselves retain excellent clarity and atmosphere typical of the period. Highly recommended for collectors and researchers of. This is a very unique record of pre WW2 history. The first six photos featured are of airborne blimps (or dirigibles). They measure 3 1/2″ X 2 1/2″. The next six measure the same and are of a Dornier DO-X. Only three were ever built and eventually scrapped. This sort of gives me the timeline and location as well as the sign on the gangway that says “No Smoking” in German. The four photos of the gentleman waiting to board the smaller 4 window plane are of a Dornier as well. There are 63 photos in all some small others large. I featured what I thought were the best. Some are 3 1/2″ X 5″ and some are larger 7″ X 9″. The others are of landscapes, office parties and what looks like a hospital. All are taken by someone who understood how to use a camera which I think was a Leica. I did not remove the photos from their clips but I could see by coaxing them forward there was writing on the back of some of them. I think an archivist should remove them and they should be translated. This truly is a wonderful snapshot in time and the blimps (dirigible) and plane photos in a group is extremely rare. Please enlarge all of the photos for details. The photos are part of the description. Lots of compliments on my packaging.
