Photo Album USS OAHU Yangtze River Gunboat US Navy Sailor China Shanghai 1930s
An outstanding US Navy or Marine sailor’s photo album. A singular production of more than 500 photographs taken or acquired while assigned to the Yangtze River gunboat USS Oahu in the early-1930’s. The album measures approximately 15 x 11. It is string bound and its flexible board panels are covered in a faux-reptile skin cloth. There are a bit more than 500 photographs (I count 513) mounted to the rectos and versos of 37 black paper leaves, loosely fit into dry corner mounts (and easily and safely removable). The majority of photos, about 350 of them, appear to be original snapshots captured by the soldier. They range in size from about 3 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ to 5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″. This section is in the front and separated by about a dozen blank leaves, then proceeded by about 160 more photographs which appear to be a blend of commercial or souvenir prints and photos captured by a more skilled photographer. Most of these measure approximately 4″ x 3″ and there are some phenomenal cultural images among them. There are also about 8 enlarged photographs, approximately 8″ x 10, ” including the excellent identified and dated photograph of the Oahu crew shown here in the first image. It is dated 1932 and is the only dated photo in the album, though the balance of contents seem firmly within the same timeframe. There is no notation to any of the album pages and we’ve carefully removed several of the prints and haven’t found any notations to print versos either. This is fresh from a local, multi-generational estate and is as-found by me ; nothing has been added or removed. I strongly suspect the soldier was from the St. This is a significant photographic document of the Yangtze Patrol captured during an important time immediately preceding the outbreak of World War II in the Pacific. I have additional images of the album available. Please send along any questions and thanks for looking. Kingdom of Yugoslavia Navy, River Flotilla Officer Bullion 1936/1941 cap badge
Kingdom of Yugoslavia Navy, River Flotilla Officer – Bullion – 1936/1941. Extremely rare sign for the Oficir Cap for the members of the Navy (River Flotilla), River Flotilla. Riverside cruisers served on the Flotilla Warships. The ships patrolled and controlled the Yugoslav state border on the Dunav River between the states, Hungary and Romania. The badge was made manually on a black textured base. Drawn out of a padded heel (thin padded copper wire). On the sign are two crossed branches with a laurel’s leaf, between which there are two crossed Admiral anchors with the monarchic crown of King Peter II. The sign is extremely rare because the river flotilla had very few river boats. He received several River Warships from the Allies after the end of World War II WW1, after the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, KuK. Dimensions: 85 x 80 mm. 1930s Handwritten Diary by 5 Marines Armed Guards Yangtze River, China65 Pages
From an estate, a handwritten diary that was found with other military items from a US 4. Marine Veteran, George Mowerr, who was in China, WW II and Korea. The diary was written by five Marines (their rank and last names listed on the first page) while on duty in China from Dec. 28, 1934 through Feb 1, 1935. There are 65 full-sized pages, handwritten in pencil, describing their trip up the Yangtze River where they were detailed as Armed Guards for the Yangtze Rapid Steamship Co. And later transferred to the I Pinged and I Chang ships. An interesting paragraph on the first page of the diary: This was written in the simple words of those who made the trip, so that as they ramble through its pages, they may live over again in their memory those days spent on the Yangtze River. I have to agree after reading this diary, very interesting details of their trip with lots of scenery descriptions of the river, weather and people who lived along the river. Paragraphs on Chinese ships and soldiers, description of night watch looking out for bandits and Reds. One of the trips ashore is described as, By chance we were witness to a very interesting sight this afternoon. We saw a number of Chinese soldiers forcing a number of Chinese civilians into service in the army. They must have had about a thousand of these recruits and they marched them down the streets four abreast. It goes into more detail, ending with the sampan going over the rapids. Many more interesting events, their thoughts and observations of the Chinese way of life, and beautiful descriptions of the scenery. A very well written diary with some sentences crossed out. Not sure if the diary is complete because it ends on Feb. With no mention of any transfer or change in duty, only that they were close to Shanghai. It ends with, We anchored for the night at 2200. Shaw said that the Captain told him we would be in Shanghai about 1000 tomorrow. Nelson is becoming more and more restless. He is longing for the dear old Shanghai nights.
