UNITED STATES SPANISH AMERICAN WAR NAVY SPECIALLY MERITORIOUS SERVICE WEST INDIES CAMPAIGN MEDAL. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED U. The Specially Meritorious Service Medal was a military decoration of the United States Navy which was created by Joint Resolution of Congress No. 18 of 3 March 1901. The medal was intended to recognize acts of non-combat meritorious service accomplished during the SpanishAmerican War. The ribbon to the Specially Meritorious Service Medal, 1898, is dark red and stands for sacrifice. Awarded to any member of the U. Navy, or United States Marines, the Specially Meritorious Service Medal was presented for acts of gallantry or heroism, not involving armed combat with an enemy, while operating in the territorial waters of Cuba in the year 1898. The medal was primarily awarded to those who had rescued sailors both U. And Spanish from burning ships following the Battle of Santiago de Cuba at Santiago, Cuba. By 1935, the Specially Meritorious Service Medal had adopted the status of a commemorative medal; as late as 1942 it still appeared on official US Navy award precedence charts, between the Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation. An actual order from the Navy, declaring the decoration obsolete, was never published. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you! The item “U. S. Considered to be the nation’s oldest jewelry company, BB&B started life in 1832, pre-dating more famous Art Deco jewelry designers such as Tiffany and Cartier by several years. By the late 1860’s, this firm was considered to be the finest jewelry maker in America and the company is indelibly linked with the American military, producing many medals, swords for prominent Union commanders during the civil war and even the proposed currency for the envisaged Confederacy-led nation during the same period. Where Tiffany & Co. The link to the White House was settled forever when BB&B were asked to do a design for the Great Seal of the United States, a design which is still in use today. The Bailey, Banks and Biddle name is still renowned among famous Art Deco jewelry designers. Their status within the ranks of the military for their designs on medals is unparalleled. Sadly, as time has progressed, the original BB&B company eventually dissolved. Having changed hands several times in the early 21st century, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Interestingly, both BB&B and Tiffany lay claim to being the ones who introduced the 925 Sterling Silver to the US, bringing silver quality in line with the British standard that was used in the rest of the world. Officially, the award goes to Tiffany’s, but BB&B make a strong case for the honor. A great filler piece for one of the rarest U. Medals, only around 99 are known to have been issued. UNITED STATES NAVY WEST INDIES CAMPAIGN SPECIALLY MERITORIOUS SERVICE CROSS MEDAL. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN. Type IV (1937): This was the type III badge rotated approximently 30 degrees. The eagle suspension was replaced with a large (37 mm x 30 1/2 mm) Air Corps devise. The reverse was marked “Pilgrim Badge/Boston” on the reverse. This version resulted from the order’s involvement with lobbying Congress for an expanded Air Corps and attract aviators to its ranks. Unable to obtain Congressional approval to wear this badge on the uniform, it was revoked and the order reverted to the Type III version. The Army & Navy Union formed without restriction to service within a particular War i. The Civil War, The Indian Wars, etc. The founders realized that those organizations would swell in membership, but over time their ranks would dwindle and then cease to exist. So, they did not make service in a particular action a criterion for membership. In 1886 it became a National Organization which was permanent for all veterans. Their charge was to Promote loyalty to the country, assemble comrades in order to perpetuate a spirit of fraternity, present social affairs, and befriend ex-servicemen and woman who might need help in securing employment, in caring for the sick, and in burying their dead.
