Straight from the estate of a well-known military antique collector which includes over 30 helmets and pickelhaubes from pre-WW1 and WW2 era that will be listed on my page in the near future (pictures available upon request). Anything mentioned herein is simply my uneducated opinion. The condition of this helmet is excellent, showing no signs of trauma or damage. The exterior leather is in great shape with no signs of crazing and minimal wear. The fur is still mostly intact but looks like some of it has fallen out over time which is to be expected from an item this age. The cloth liner shows light wear and some of the stitches have loosened, but it’s still in great condition. The leather chin strap shows some cracking from age but is still solid and fully intact. This particular helmet has quite the history behind it as it belonged to Royal Air Force Bristol fighter pilot squadron leader Alan Thomas Kingston Shipwright. A veteran of the Great War who was shot down behind enemy lines east of Ypres in August 1917, whilst serving with 19 squadron. Taken POW, Shipwright was a persistent escaper and one of the’Holzminden Tunnellers’ – taking part in the largest and most celebrated POW escape of the Great War, July 24/25 1918. His full history can be found by clicking on the following link. This does not appear to be a reproduction but its authenticity cannot be guaranteed. Stand seen in pictures not included.

Pre-WW2 Leather Jacket Back Patch 27th Aero Pursuit Squadron AAC 1930s 15 in diameter at the widest. This a killer-looking NEWLY-made patch! Heres an exquisite, one-of-kind multi-layered-leather patch for an A2 Flight Jacket (or an earlier Army Air Corps leather jacket). I had this made for me based upon an actual hand-painted image on a canvas fuselage section removed from a 27th Aero Squadrons aircraft (depicted in pictures 10, 11, and 12). Still active as the 27th Fighter Squadron, this unit is the oldest active fighter squadron in the United States Air Force, with over 95 years of service to the nation! The 27th Fighter Squadron was organized as the 21st (later 27th) Aero Squadron on 15 June 1917 at Kelly Field, Texas. The squadron deployed to France and fought on the Western Front during World War I as a pursuit squadron. It took part in the Champagne-Marne defensive; Aisne-Marne offensive; St. Mihiel offensive, and Meuse-Argonne offensive. Lieutenant Frank Luke, Jr. Known as the “Arizona Balloon Buster, ” for his daring feats against the HEAVILY defended German observation balloons, was the squadron’s most colorful ace. His 18 victories cost him his life, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Aircraft flown by the 27th during World War I include the Nieuport 28, Spad XIII and Sopwith F-1 Camel. In the period between the world wars, the 27th Pursuit Squadron, re-designated 25 January 1923, was stationed primarily at Selfridge Field, Michigan, with the 1st Fighter Group. 27th Pursuit Squadron pilots participated in air races. Donald Stace of the 27th AS won the first Mitchell Trophy Race. Under extreme and austere conditions in the 1920s they tested the effects of cold weather on their aircraft. At times it was so cold, the engines of their P-1 Hawk aircraft would not start until steam was forced into the engines to thaw them. While they were stationed at Selfridge Field, Mich. Pilots from the 27th AS put on aerial demonstrations all over the country throughout the 1920s. One of those was at Langley Field in March, 1925. A large silhouette of a battleship on the grass landing strip served as a target, which was successfully strafed and bombed for several duly impressed congressmen. During World War II the unit served in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) as part of Twelfth Air Force as a P-38 Lightning fighter squadron, participating in the North African and Italian campaigns. During the Cold War it was both an Air Defense Command fighter-interceptor squadron as later as part of Tactical Air Command. It was the first USAF operational squadron equipped with the F-15A Eagle in January 1976. 102nd Observation Squadron badge! ULTRA RARE, the REAL DEAL! 1920’s era highly sought after early aviation squadron insignia pin made in sterling silver by Dieges & Clust. Correct back pin alignment. Came from the collection of a noted collector and OMSA (winner will get this info). Original ones of these are very rare and don’t come out of collections often, don’t miss your chance for this one it could be years before another one is available. History: The 102nd Observation Squadron organized on March 22, 1921 under the command of Maj. Littauer as the 102nd Squadron, 27th Division Air service, New York National Guard. The unit was redesigned the 102nd Observation Squadron on January 23, 1923. This squadron can trace its history back to a group formed by aviation enthusiasts in the NY National Guard in April 1908. They became the 1st Aero Company on November 1,1915 and became the first National Guard unit in aviation and to be pressed into federal service on July 13, 1916 for use in the Mexican Punitive Expedition. When the United States entered World War I, all National Guard aviation units were dissolved. New York’s 1st Aero Company was no different and it was disbanded on May 23, 1917. The founder of the unit, Captain Raynall Cawthorne Bolling and almost all of the members of the unit left the National Guard to join the Army Signal Corps Reserve and in May 1917 founded the 1st Aero Reserve squadron. That unit was sent to France in August 1917 and designated 26th Aero Squadron. Its personnel and aircraft formed the basis for an aviation school and maintenance unit. After the war, a group of veteran pilots initiated the formation of an Aero Club, which became the 102nd.
