What is this book? This is an original ” (Gokeiton Gashi)” pictorial history book, published in Showa 3 (1928). Who was Prince Chichibu? Prince Chichibu was one of the central members of the Imperial Family during the 1920s-40s. Known for his military career, he studied in the UK, served in the Imperial Japanese Army, and represented the Imperial Family in public and ceremonial events. In 1928, he was 26 years old and actively involved in state functions. What does mean? The title translates as Illustrated History of Imperial Celebrations. These were richly printed commemorative albums featuring photographs and illustrations of state occasions-imperial enthronements, parades, military reviews, and public ceremonies. Published in October 1928 (Showa 3) by (Rekishi Gahosha, Historical Pictorial Press, Tokyo). It documents ceremonies in Tokyo and other locations in Japan, celebrating the enthronement of Emperor Showa and related imperial events. Why was it made? 61mm in diameter and made by the Osaka Mint, this bronze table medal was issued in 1921 to commemorate a voyage made to Europe by the then Crown Prince (the future Emperor Hirohito). It is still in its titled and fitted case of issue, which is hard to find. This greatly increases the risk that an item can get permanently lost.
The obverse depicting a bare headed bust left, the reverse with the Prince of Wales’ feathers, unnamed, with suspension loop and ribbon for wearing. Diameter approximately 51mm, maker’s marks for. British hallmarks for Birmingham, 1921. The reverse of the medal is centering on the badge for the Prince of Wales within the Garter and surrounded by the collar and suspending the Most Exalted Order of The Star of India. It depicts the profile of Queen Victoria surmounted by a five pointed star, with the motto of the Order. Heaven’s Light Our Guide. This Order was founded by Queen Victoria on 23rd February 1861 and was awarded to Indian Princes and British Subjects for distinguished and loyal service to the Indian Empire. The Order is no longer awarded and there have been no appointments since 1947. Only 84 medals of this type were awarded to Indian officers and police to mark the Royal Tour of India.
