Jansen Military and Personal Correspondence U. Occupation of the Philippine islands Over 130 letters with the vast majority having stamped covers concerning the military career of Colonel Thomas E. Jansen who served during the American colonization of the Philippines. His primary home address is 3 Wolcott Road Winchester, Mass. In one particular letter Colonel Jansen is taken to a remote island in the Philippines by submarine where he is stationed by himself. The letters cover the years 1918 through the 1920’s. Great cancellation marks throughout with good content. This is a rare glimpse from of American control and occupation of the Filipino people and territory. Photograph album of Anderson Banks Lester, filled approximately 525 photographs (most snapshots, but 16 large format) documenting his time stationed on the submarine tender U. Canopus in China and the Philippines in the 1930s. The album itself measures 11 x 14 inches and is about two inches thick. It is a commercially produced album marketed specifically to military men, with a printed title page headed “My Oriental Album, ” on which the owner signs his name. It includes 10 are large, hand-colored photographs ca. 7 x 9 to 8 x 10 and six large b/w photos. The remainder are a range of snapshot sizes (b/w), with most in the range of 2.5 x 4.25 to 3.25 x 5.75 inches. Condition of the album is very good, but there are several pages with photos missing. He was born in Canada in 1875. Became a US Philippine Scout in 1901. A few years later around 1905 he was on military trial for manslaughter but later acquitted. He was promoted and reappointed several times as Captain. He retired in 1919. Now this camera is a Graflex 1A. Not sure at what point the camera was used and what for. The camera based on the latest date was around 1916. This is the info that we were able to gather so far. It is a tad bit dusty. The lens is a Bausch and Lomb Tessar 3.25×4.25. It has Norman E Cook’s name on the back of the camera as well as his three addresses: Army and Navy Club Manilla PI, California Tennis Club San Francicsco, CA and River Road, Youngstown, NY. Two albums brought home by a USMC veteran of old China and the Philippines, having served in Peking, Tientsin, Shanghai and Cavite. Has a wonderful painted front cover with Marine’s name painted to the front right “Smead C Posey”, US and Marine Corps flags, crossed rifles and a Carabao/water buffalo skull. Worn but visible is Cavite P. I under the flags. 178 total original photos of sites and scenes around Shanghai, Cavite and Tientsin. Some photos are missing and onion skin divider pages are cracked brittle or coming loose. Multiple photos that depict the Boeing or China Clipper, Chinese scenes, Philippine girlfriends, on the beach, on the range, Cavite barracks and buildings, some colorized photos, Cavite USMC basketball team, a group photo, the salt beds, and Enlisted Club at Tientsin. Second album is a scrap book, someone has scratched out the “S”, kinda funny… It has about 12 pages of photos, receipts, signatures, chits, a couple of bulletins, postcards and comes with over 50 loose scrap or cutouts from Magazines and newspaper, subject mainly military, poems, and scenes of Philippines and China. A great and rare chance at a unique piece of USMC and China Marine history. Measures 15″ x 11″ long. Books go media rate.
