This is an original commemorative postcard set issued for the Special Grand Fleet Review of October 1919 (Taisho 8), held by the Imperial Japanese Navy. ? What was the 1919 Grand Fleet Review? The Fleet Review was a national ceremony where the Emperor inspected the Imperial Navy’s warships. The 1919 review took place shortly after Japan emerged as one of the victorious powers of World War I, expanding its influence in the Pacific and proudly displaying its naval strength to the world. Post-World War I Japan: Japan gained international prestige, securing mandates over former German territories in the South Pacific. Taisho Democracy Era: At home, democratic movements were growing, while the navy remained a symbol of power and national pride. Imperial Ceremony: The Fleet Review was not just a military display but also a state ritual linking the Emperor, the armed forces, and the people. ? About this Item. The book was issued by a naval research publisher in Tokyo and presents the true contemporary view of Japan’s naval power before WWII, not a postwar reprint or retrospective work. What this book contains. Battleships, cruisers, aircraft carriers, and submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Naval aviation, seaplanes, and flight operations. Torpedoes, naval mines, and modern naval weapons. Sailors’ daily life, onboard operations, and training scenes. Naval ports, facilities, and fleet overviews with specifications. The volume is heavily illustrated with authentic period photographs, allowing collectors to visually study the IJN at its peak development stage. Published years before the Pacific War, this book reflects how the Imperial Japanese Navy presented its strength to the public at the time. It is a valuable primary source for researchers, historians, and serious naval collectors. Unlike modern publications, this book preserves the original language, layout, photography, and ideology of the era. Visible age wear, edge wear, and toning due to age. Catalog Fighting Ships by T. Jane (aka famous “Jane’s Fighting Ships”). 1920 edition by Sampson Low, Martson & Co Naval Publishers, London and Edinburgh. Hard cover, 12 ½ x 8 format, 579 pp. The front cover and several advertisement pages in the front are loose, but the binding of the text block is otherwise holding together well. The spine cover is missing. Boards worn at the corners and scuffed on the front. Some of the pages, mostly in the back, are wrinkled and creased. The interior is very clean overall with mild age toning only. There is a lightly sketched caricature portrait of a man and some scribbled notes in pencil throughout the first advertisement pages. The main portion of the book however is nearly pristine: shows no stains, pen or pencil marks, or tears, although few last pages (primarily on the Turkish navy) have wear to the edges. This book is a great resource for a naval historian, collector or model builder.
