A great piece of original. 1920’s pen, ink and watercolor. Done for the Marine. Magazine, depicting a salty Sgt Smith (with his target box stating “OLYMPIC TEAM”) on the range with a dejected looking Pvt Jones, on the 500 rapid line. Pvt Jones appears to be seeking the Sergeant’s help or is in awe of the Sgt’s score. I have only seen one other Leatherneck cover artwork available, and it was from the 1950’s. This piece of art. Was used as the basis for cover art. On an issue from. And was a 1920’s illustrator. I have found his work in many fishing related and nature magazines. As a 1stLt he was on the staff of “Our Navy” Magazine and did graphic art for that magazine. Fellowes was also one of the officers that served with the Policia Nacional Dominicana and was in charge of the officer school during the occupation of the Dominican Republic. The artwork comes with a Mint condition October 1935 issue, depicting the art. Art watercolor has faded over time and there is aging throughout. You can see where it once was matted and framed. It was formed on 17 February 1919 as the Second Marine Brigade from sailors (Matrosen) of the former Imperial German Navy under the leadership of Hermann Ehrhardt. The Brigade was used primarily in the suppression of the Bavarian Soviet Republic and the First Silesian Uprising, both in the first half of 1919. In March 1920, faced with its imminent disbanding by orders of the government in Berlin, the Marine Brigade was one of the main supporters of the Kapp Putsch that tried to overthrow the Weimar Republic. Beautiful and rare original 1956 Spanish Civil War Commemorative Medal for Polish soldiers in the XIII International Brigade with ribbon! Medal is in fantastic shape for it’s age! He was also a Charter member of The League of World War One Aviation Historians. In 2001, he became an editor for Over the Front quarterly magazine and while a member of the Gulf Cost Chapter of the League of WWI Aviation Historians, he earned the Thornton D. Hooper Award for Excellence for his article on Monoplane Fighters of World War I. In 2007, he received his second Thornton D. Hooper Award for An Evening with Rodney Williams, 17th Aero Squadron. Much of his collection is on display at the University of Texas at Dallas’ Eugene McDermott Library.
