WWII M1917 “Remington” Eddystone Bayonet & M1917 V. P. Co. Was designed to be used with the US. Rifle, as well as with the seven different U. The M1917 bayonet, being a direct copy of the British P14 bayonet, retained the transverse cuts in the grip panels. In US service these transverse cuts served no official purpose. Bayonet has a 17 blade stamped 1917 & REMINGTON inside of a circle. The reverse side is stamped with Ordinance Symbol, Eagle, U. & a faint stamped number 9. Scabbard is stamped U. M1917 & V. P. Co. On the metal throat. Also has an oil hole. Antique original Chinese made pith helmet, otherwise known as a sun helmet. The brim is fabric covered cork and does have some damage. I would consider the entire helmet to be very very fragile. The paper manufacturers tag inside is similar to tags found in Japanese helmets. Which roughly translates to Produced by the factory of Guangda Industrial Co. I do not know exactly when the helmet was produced, who would have worn it, and whether it is a military helmet or not. The closest match I have found online was described as a Chinese made helmet for use in Imperial Japan. This helmet appears to fit the same description, but I consider it to be an unknown as I have no proof that it was used by Japan and no year of manufacture. Photographed in natural daylight. Photos may not accurately represent actual colors. Photos are of actual items you will receive. Please see photos for condition. I can send more photos if needed. Captain Harmon enlisted in 1933, US Naval Academy 1938, USS Saratoga, WWII CO of VPB-105 flying PB4Y-1s out of RAF Station Dunkeswell England. Harmon was piloting his aircraft on Nov 10, 1943 when he became involved in a legendary battle of aircraft vs surfaced U-Boat – the U-966 commanded by Eckehard Wolf. The U-966 fought an extremely long running tag team battle – 1st vs a No. 612 squadron Wellington bomber, then a No. 407 sqdn Wellington which was shot down by U-966s deck gun, Harmon next jumped in and took damage from AA fire disabling his bomb bay doors, then a VB-103 PBY followed by one from VB-110, lastly a No. 311 Sqdn Czech Liberator forced the U-Boat capt to scuttle the boat off the coast of Spain with 6 dead and the rest captured.
