A beautiful fifteen inch, boxwood & lacquered brass, parallel rule for navigational use by W H Harling, 47 Finsbury, London. The makers were at this address in the early 1900s. It has a fine, fitted mahogany box. Owned by Vice Admiral Sir Cecil Charles Hughes-Hallett with a brass nameplate attached to one end. This item was given to us by the daughter of Admiral Hughes-Hallett. Sir Cecil Charles Hughes-Hallett. Born on 6 April 1898, Charles Hughes-Hallett was educated at Bedford School, Emmanuel College, Cambridge, the Royal Naval College, Osborne and at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He served in the Royal Navy during the First World War and was present at the Battle of the Dardanelles and at the Battle of Jutland. After distinguished service during the Second World War he was appointed as Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleet between 1950 and 1951. He was appointed as Head of British Naval Mission, Washington between 1952 and 1954. This is an original WWII Japanese Navy Vice Admirals large shipboard flag. It measures 5 foot 5 inches by 8 foot 8 inches and the panels are all sewn together. Has several holes and stains, but still displays great. These flags are very hard to find in any condition. All our items come from estate sales, yard sales, flea markets or places that we have traveled. All Japanese items come directly from Japan.
