An outstanding US Navy or Marine sailor’s photo album. A singular production of more than 500 photographs taken or acquired while assigned to the Yangtze River gunboat USS Oahu in the early-1930’s. The album measures approximately 15 x 11. It is string bound and its flexible board panels are covered in a faux-reptile skin cloth. There are a bit more than 500 photographs (I count 513) mounted to the rectos and versos of 37 black paper leaves, loosely fit into dry corner mounts (and easily and safely removable). The majority of photos, about 350 of them, appear to be original snapshots captured by the soldier. They range in size from about 3 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ to 5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″. This section is in the front and separated by about a dozen blank leaves, then proceeded by about 160 more photographs which appear to be a blend of commercial or souvenir prints and photos captured by a more skilled photographer. Most of these measure approximately 4″ x 3″ and there are some phenomenal cultural images among them. There are also about 8 enlarged photographs, approximately 8″ x 10, ” including the excellent identified and dated photograph of the Oahu crew shown here in the first image. It is dated 1932 and is the only dated photo in the album, though the balance of contents seem firmly within the same timeframe. There is no notation to any of the album pages and we’ve carefully removed several of the prints and haven’t found any notations to print versos either. This is fresh from a local, multi-generational estate and is as-found by me ; nothing has been added or removed. I strongly suspect the soldier was from the St. This is a significant photographic document of the Yangtze Patrol captured during an important time immediately preceding the outbreak of World War II in the Pacific. I have additional images of the album available. Please send along any questions and thanks for looking. Navy photo album of Philip Whitman while aboard the USS Augusta in China, French Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia), Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, and Bali. 563 photos on 78 pages. The photo album documents the ships time in the Far East during and after its involvement in the Second Sino-Japanese War. Well over half of the album photos were taken in China, with approximately 75 from French Indochina (Vietnam & Cambodia), and 38 from Thailand. Many of the unidentified photos are likely China. Chinese cities include Shanghai (including Hangkou, a district in Shanghai), Peking (Beijing), Tsingtao (Qingdao), Qinhuangdao, Chefoo (Yantai), and Weihaiwei (Weihai). French Indochina cities include Haiphong, Siem Reap, Hanoi, and Saigon. Thailand photos are from Bangkok. Additional photos from the Philippines, Bali, and Singapore. Nearly 60 of the China photos depict the effects of the ongoing war including bombings, ruins, torture & executions of Japanese, etc. Beautiful Chinese silk hand embroidered designs on the front and reverse, protected with a clear plastic album covering. The artist has signed their work at the top of the Peking Temple of Heaven (see second to last photo). The protective tissue between each page alternates with different colors including light green, pink, purple, light yellow, dark pink, red, etc. The first 55 pages are mostly annotated. The last 20 pages are not. There are a half dozen spots where photos are missing. This is how I acquired the album. The USS Augusta (CL/CA-31) was involved in a tragic event on August 20, 1937. A Chinese anti-aircraft shell fell onto the deck amidst a group of sailors, killing Seaman 1st/Class Freddie John Falgout and wounding 18 others. As the flagship of the Asiatic fleet, USS Augusta had sailed to Shanghai to observe the Sino-Japanese hostilities and to protect American interests there. The cruiser had sailed to Shanghai a few days after Chinese and Japanese forces started to battle for control of the city near the middle of August. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman under wartime conditions. Extensive information can be found online. Whitman (1919 – 2019) of Fair Lawn, New Jersey served with the U. Navy from 1937 to 1941, first on the U. Navy Sailor Photo Album Journal Diary Gallipoli Jerusalem Syria. Photo Album Depicting Navy Man’s Worldwide Tours. String-tied black cloth over flexible card. 142 pages pages with 490 black and white photographs inserted into corner mounts. Most photos measure from 2½ x 3½ to 3 x 5 and all but 14 are captioned. Additionally, 16 pages of typescript bound in before the photos + Epsel’s Navy identification card and discharge papers. Album good, because it lacks its front cover and has heavy edge wear; otherwise near fine with near fine or better photos, though some are faded; three photos lacking. An immense photo album detailing a sailor’s exploits on three long cruises in the early 1920s. Henry Epsel spent many months at sea and was rarely without a camera. The album starts with his typescript timeline that provides dates, places and short notes of experiences such as in September 1922 when his group participated in getting tens of thousands of refugees out of Smyrna. He loved Australia, writing, most wonderful welcome and reception ever received by sailors. Beautiful women and girls are plenty here. We were forced into company of girls at all times. It did not pay for us to get drunk as we lost out on too much of good times. With the exception of Russia, he took photos of nearly every place he visited including Beirut, Jaffa, England, Holland, Cuba, the Panama Canal, California, Athens, Constantinople and more. There are moving images of makeshift cemeteries at Gallipoli and quite a few street shots in many of the cities. We see worshipers at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, ruins at Balbak, Syria, and ships filled with refugees. A self proclaimed ladies’ man, there’s a number of photos of the beauties Epsel left on land including Rotterdam Special, my Dutch girl and my Spanish queen. While this is more a travel album than a military one there’s well over 100 photos of ships and maneuvers as well as life aboard his ships. A comprehensive look at the world through the eyes of a sailor with a good number of well composed images. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers.
