ORIGINAL PRE WORLD WAR II UNITED STATES NAVY CAPTAIN/MARINE CORPS COLONEL “WAR EAGLE” RANK INSIGNIA, 1-1/2 INCH SIZE, PIN-BACK W/ LOCKING CATCH. The insignia for a colonel is a silver eagle which is a stylized representation of the eagle dominating the Great Seal of the United States (which is the coat of arms of the United States). As on the Great Seal, the eagle has a U. Shield superimposed on its chest and is holding an olive branch and bundle of arrows in its talons. However, in simplification of the Great Seal image, the insignia lacks the scroll in the eagle’s mouth and the rosette above its head. On the Great Seal, the olive branch is always clutched in the eagle’s right-side talons, while the bundle of arrows is always clutched in the left-side talons. The head of the eagle faces towards the olive branch, rather than the arrows, advocating peace rather than war. As a result, the head of the eagle always faces towards the viewer’s left. Some colonel eagles from the 1920s to the 1950s faced the arrows, though this is no longer done. The full-sized colonel eagle is exactly two inches in diameter from the tips of each wing. Set of 3 pre WWII Republic of Latvia orders and medals. Very rare pre WWII Latvian distinguished flying badge surmounted by the Latvian fire cross, or ugunskrusts, connected to a chain holding a hovering eagle. The Latvian Aviation Regiment was established in 1919 out of native Latvian pilots who were part of the Russian Imperial Air Force. Once a peace between Latvia and the Soviet Union was signed in 1920, the independent Latvian air forces continued until overrun by the Soviet Union at the start of the second world war. Latvian pilots continued to fly with the German Luftwaffe ex-patria, wearing Luftwaffe uniforms with a combination of German and Latvian pilot insignias. The Latvian Aviation Regiment (also referred to as the air division) was the primary military aviation force. Active members wore a distinguished flying badge surmounted by the Latvian fire cross, or ugunskrusts, connected to a chain holding a hovering eagle. The badge was in gold for officers, silver for NCO Also. Order of the Three Stars Triju Zvaigznu ordenis. Order of the Three Stars is the highest civilian order awarded for meritorious service to Latvia. It was established in 1924 in remembrance of the founding of Latvia. Its motto is “Per aspera ad astra”, meaning “Through hardships to the stars”. The Order has five ranks and three grades of medals of honour. Also medal of Independence. Antique original Chinese made pith helmet, otherwise known as a sun helmet. The brim is fabric covered cork and does have some damage. I would consider the entire helmet to be very very fragile. The paper manufacturers tag inside is similar to tags found in Japanese helmets. Which roughly translates to Produced by the factory of Guangda Industrial Co. I do not know exactly when the helmet was produced, who would have worn it, and whether it is a military helmet or not. The closest match I have found online was described as a Chinese made helmet for use in Imperial Japan. This helmet appears to fit the same description, but I consider it to be an unknown as I have no proof that it was used by Japan and no year of manufacture. Photographed in natural daylight.
