1922 USNA Naval Academy 14K Gold Class Pin – EAN Initials.
Antique 1924 USNA United States Navel Academy 14k yellow gold pin, in very nice antique condition, still very crisp with lots of detail. It’s just shy of 1″ with 1″ wing span. It’s fully hallmarked and tested. Weighs 4.9 grams. We are jewelers all of our items are professionally inspected and tested, we guarantee all of our items to be as described. Chapeau, Epaulettes, Belt in the Original Tin. USNA Class of 1935. A very nice grouping! In the original Tin case. The latch was broken off/removed at one time lost the key? , but they kept the latch fixings inside and the key is present. Chapeau is in used condition, showing some wear of the fur in many places (it was well used). Silk inside is intact showing spotting/staining (view all photos). I cannot find a maker for the hat on it. Creasing all along the hat band (see photos). The epaulettes are in very good, but used condition – some spotting on the gold tops (see photos), stamped “Made in France” underneath on the hook areas. The Belt is also there and is in very good / but used condition, showing wear and use as would be typical. The Tin is very nice overall, hinges working nicely, the black paint is scratched all over due to use, storage, and time, as well as having an “HCL” painted on the top and a large stain/dirt area. It needs a gentle cleaning. The key to the case is affixed to the handle by a WWII era shoe-lace. View all photos for condition. ORIGINAL PRE WWII STERLING USNA NAVAL ACADEMY STERLING OBJECT W/ PILOTS UNITS ENGRAVED. Bought from local estate. Approx 1″ X 3″, perhaps a large napkin holder? Has many of this noted aviator’s assignment engraved also sides. Original photo of officer is included. Captain Harmon enlisted in 1933, US Naval Academy 1938, USS Saratoga, WWII CO of VPB-105 flying PB4Y-1s out of RAF Station Dunkeswell England. Harmon was piloting his aircraft on Nov 10, 1943 when he became involved in a legendary battle of aircraft vs surfaced U-Boat – the U-966 commanded by Eckehard Wolf. The U-966 fought an extremely long running tag team battle – 1st vs a No. 612 squadron Wellington bomber, then a No. 407 sqdn Wellington which was shot down by U-966s deck gun, Harmon next jumped in and took damage from AA fire disabling his bomb bay doors, then a VB-103 PBY followed by one from VB-110, lastly a No. 311 Sqdn Czech Liberator forced the U-Boat capt to scuttle the boat off the coast of Spain with 6 dead and the rest captured. For this fight he was awarded a US and British DFC and the Russian Order of Glory 3rd Class. He is one of a handful of US officers to be awarded the OG3 and the British DFC is a scarce award to US pilots as well. Post war he assumed many different commands until retirement in 1968.
