1925 Submariner Photo Album Navy Subs, USS Arizona, S-51 Sunken, Carrier Langley. 1925, 1926, 1927 photo album from an early US submariner. Leather bound, 80 pages, probably 130 historical navy related photos. All photos are removable and none are pasted down. Several photos of the S-51 which was sunk and retrieved with large crew loss. Pictures of subs S-10, S-11, S-12, S-13. Pictures of the battleships Arizona, California, Tennessee, West Virginian, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Mississippi, Seattle, Idaho and more before Pearl. Picture of the USS Langley, an early carrier. Photo of the airship Shenendoah. Photos of loading torpedoes and a scarce photo of S-12 through the periscope of S-13. I have never had one like it before. Virtually everything is named and annotated including the subs, ships, and all the personnel. The named admiral is H. Lots of the shots are from New London, many from West Coast and San Francisco. Last 10-15 pages are the sailor after discharge as a cab driver and truck driver in San Francisco. Includes his id from the cab company with his photo on reverse. Included is another smaller album of about 30 pages with mostly his girlfriends and family pictures from the 20’s. This impressive album is 15 x 11.5 with approximately 275 photographs. It is incredibly well done. The photographs are in very nice shape; the cover has. The images document the service of a Marine, assigned to Marine Scouting Squadron VS-1M and begin with photographs of Marine Barracks San Diego, followed by the units deployment to Guam. It helped establish Orote Field at the Apra Harbor Naval Station, the first Marine aviation base in the Pacific. It concludes with images of the Philippines and China. In 1925 fighting between Chinese warlords reached the city of Shanghai, and twice during the year small contingents of Marines landed in the city to protect American interests. In 1927, a more serious threat blossomed as one of the Chinese forces pushed towards the city crushing all opposition in its path and panicking the International Settlement. Remembering the Boxer Rebellion and fearful of recent Communist depredations, the residents of the community clamored for their governments to provide protection. So, in early 1927, the United States ordered the initial deployment of about 340 Marines from Guam to Shanghai including Marine Scouting Squadron VS-1M. Highlights of this album include images of. 1937 Imperial Japanese Navy Training Photo Album Book RARE Pre-WWII. The pages are divided by thin rice paper that has printed Japanese Text. The pages of the book are full of Japanese Text as well, especially the rear final pages which look to be perhaps a listing to all the crew members! This Vintage Japanese Imperial Navy album is in good condition for its age, showing some mild edge wear to the covers. The binding is original and is holding strong, albeit slightly loose. The interior pages shows light-mild scuffing and coloration from age/display. The rice paper dividers are in good shape, with only 1 missing and some light creasing present in a few pages. WW2 Photo Album China 1937 Japanese Army Occupation Nanking Nanjing Zaozhuang Xuzhou with 384 Photographs Album has descriptions in Japanese on the pages or under the photographs. Some of the cities and counties include Hanzhuang, Jining, Yi, Yixian, Zaozhuang, Xuzhou, Shandong, Jiangsu, Weishan Lake, Han Village, and others. We have seen quite a few Photo Albums that centered around China including many from US servicemen who served in Country. Some were in the 1920s or before and others focusing on just after WW2 US occupation. This album is different in its content and scope because of all the rare locations and subject matter covered. Normally, most Japanese soldier’s photo albums have no Chinese content and if they do is just a small amount of content. What makes the album rare is that all the photos are from towns and cities in China rarely seen. One series of photos shows Japanese soldiers repairing a hotel to be used for comfort women. They hang up a new wooden sign, Hotel Pyeongyang House over “Maohe Hotel” sign. Now to be used as comfort station. What follow is a few pages of photos of comfort women with some obviously Korean and Chinese, and some may be even Japanese. Another series of photos depicts Japanese soldiers and Chinese installing telephone poles. Some of the photographs including marriage ceremony, funerals, soldiers caravans, railroad stations, bridges, war damage, trains, drinking, fishing, farming, weapons, Pagodas, monuments, Shrines, tractors, etc. Surprisingly no gore or death scenes with just a few prisoners and punishment scenes. Without knowing the history of Japan occupation of China, one viewing this album might conclude peace and harmony between Japanese soldiers and Chinese during the war.
