During the years 1936 to 1939, the 3rd Battalion, 1st Punjab Regiment (3/1st Punjab) was actively deployed on the North West Frontier Province, specifically operating in the highly volatile Waziristan region (modern-day Pakistan). The 1st Battalion, 18th Royal Garhwal Rifles (1-18 Garhwal Rifles) actively served during the tribal uprisings on the North-West Frontier (now Pakistan) from 1937 to 1939. The battalion was engaged in counter-insurgency and regional pacification operations, countering Pashtun tribal guerrillas in regions like Waziristan. British India General Service Medal Northwest Frontier 1936-37 – 1-16 Punjab Regt. Officially impressed 8904 L-Naik Mohd. In October 1937, the 1/16 Battalion was assigned to the 3rd (Jhelum) Brigade at Ghariom and subsequently moved to Mir Ali to secure the vital Bannu-Razmak road. British India Silver War Medal w double clasp (note: double clasp is RARE): “Mohmand 1933″ and “Northwest Frontier 1935″ with King George VI on obverse and. Of Jamrud in the Khyber Pass on reverse. The original hanging green ribbon is missing. Impressed along the margin of this service medal : 1 22 Sep. LAB SINGH, 3-2 Punjab R. (meaning Lab Singh was a sepoy in the 3rd Battalion of the Second Punjabi Regiment).
I got this recently from an estate and don’t know much about it. It looks like it may be sterling? The medal is almost 1 1/2 in diameter. It is stamped, “GEORGIVUS VDG BRITT OMN REXETINDIAE IMP” on the front and “INDIA” on the back. The bar is stamped, North West Frontier 1930-31. ” On the bottom edge it is stamped, “6906 SEP KARIM KHAN No 2-1 PUNJAB R. The medal is in good. Check out the photos!
