Direct from his Estate. More of his medals will be available this week. Earlier that year, the Negro Rebellion. Had erupted throughout Cuba among former black slaves. A 1st Provisional Marine Regiment of 450 men under Colonel. Lincoln Karmany was assembled in Philadelphia. At the same time, a 2nd Provisional Marine Regiment of 750 men under Colonel James Mahoney assembled at Key West, Florida. The two regiments sailed for Cuba aboard the USS Prairie. With 1st Battalion, 2nd Regiment, landing at Havana. And the remainder of the force at Guantanamo. There they combined to form the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade in early June under Karmany, and the United States Marines fanned out in Oriente Province. Occupying 26 towns and controlling all rail traffic in the area. The Marines protected United States sugar plantations. And El Cobre until late July when the Cuban government was able to clamp down on the revolt. Another 1st Marine Brigade. Was created once again during the Occupation of Haiti. This brigade, however, was not considered a “provisional” unit and maintained a permanent establishment in Haiti from 1915 to 1934. The 1st Marine Brigade was considered a separate unit lineage, and it was reactivated in 1941 and expanded to form the 1st Marine Division. Rare original Chinese medal, pre WW2. Includes the medal, a ribbon device (which is pin back with a metal backing) and the original cloth issue envelope. The medal and ribbon device are both stamped with number 7399. The envelope is stamped 7399. The medal measures approximately 1 3/4 across at the widest. The pin back ribbon device measures approximately 1 3/16 long and the envelope measures approximately 2 3/8 x 3 5/8. The ribbon shows soiling and the medal some age discoloration. The ribbon device has rust stains around the edge. Very usual to find all three numbered pieces together. This is a rare US Navy grouping for a man who was stationed on the USS NARWHAL at Pearl Harbor on Dec. See pictures 10 and 11. The group consists of his frock coat, evening dress coat, trousers with braid, and his Midshipman tunic. All are in very nice condition with only one button missing from the tunic. The fore and aft hat, epaulettes, and gold belt are in a tin box with his initials painted on top. All are in excellent condition except for the box. It is dented with paint missing and the lock is off but included. The sword is in fine condition with the scabbard showing only very minor flaking. The leather case is in good condition but is missing part of the strap to buckle it closed and some mild mothing to the liner. Scabbard is engraved with his initials and the leather case also has his initials. Interestingly his last name is misspelled on the blade, an “A” is missing. Also included is his 1931 Academy yearbook, silver anniversary yearbook, and thirty first anniversary yearbook. The papers that are included are all copies except his retirement paper. Also included is a second sword belt, a medal and a comb with missing teeth in a leather pouch which also has a rusting file. I think this is the highlight of the whole group. The USS Narwhal is credited with shooting down a Japanese Zero (along with a destroyer) which is the first submarine kill of the war. This group is from the officer who claims he shot it down. This is a rare Pearl Harbor AND submarine related group. I just noticed that in the picture of the yearbooks there is a small book titled The Silver Quiver, it does not go with this group. The crate has been in my attic for over 25 years and is under a large pile of stuff. No sense in digging it out until or if the group sells. The price listed may be lower if you live on the East Coast. It will take me a few days to dig out the crate and pack everything safely so please be patient.
