United States Navy electricians mate 1st class Leo Benedict Bridge was born March 21st 1903 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. At 17 years old he trained as an apprentice electrician. Leo enlisted as a seaman in the U. He was transferred to the Destroyer U. The Noa arrived at Nanjing, China in February 1927 relieving the U. Preston, and Royal Navy light cruiser HMS Emerald, she helped to rescue foreigners from Nanjing. This allowed refugees to retreat down the hill to the safety of U. Bridge was promoted to electrician’s mate 1st class while the Noa participated in the periodic fleet exercises which were intended to keep crew and equipment at peak efficiency. For his service in China, EM1c Bridge was issued Yangtze Service Medal M. Bridge was also issued a Navy Good Conduct medal for his 1st enlistment in 1928. On January 19th 1929 Bridge sailed aboard the U. Grant from Manila, Philippines to San Francisco, California where he was discharged from the Navy. During World War II Leo worked at the Springfield Trailer Company. He then worked for Harry Cooper Supply until he retired. United States Navy electricians mate 1st class Leo Benedict Bridge passed away August 24th 1974. He is buried at the Eastlawn Cemetery. Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. Served in Haitian Campaign, China WWI, and Interwar period around the world. Direct from his Estate. Both Clasps are named and engraved to! Arrived in New York in November 1919 and, after a major overhaul, was sent to join the Pacific Fleets Mine Squadron 4, which was based in the eastern Pacific. Continued working as a minesweeper until 1 June 1922, when she was decommissioned and placed in reserve at Pearl Harbor. Was re-commissioned 13 October 1923 and was converted into a gunboat for service with the US Navys Asiatic Fleet. She left Pearl Harbor and headed west to become part of the famous Yangtze Patrol and was based at Shanghai. Although this was supposed to be only a temporary assignment. Remained with the Yangtze Patrol for seven years, protecting American lives and property while battling Chinese pirates and warlords. Sailed to Cavite in the Philippines for a brief period of time before being ordered to go to Guam. With the coming of World War II in the Pacific, Japan invaded China and was making ominous moves towards many of the islands in the region. Was ordered to increase her patrols around Guam and to guard against any Japanese warships that could potentially threaten the island. No one really knew, though, what the small and poorly armed gunboat could do if it encountered units from the enormous Japanese Navy. A 1st Provisional Marine Regiment of 450 men under Colonel. Lincoln Karmany was assembled in Philadelphia. At the same time, a 2nd Provisional Marine Regiment of 750 men under Colonel James Mahoney assembled at Key West, Florida. The two regiments sailed for Cuba aboard the USS Prairie. With 1st Battalion, 2nd Regiment, landing at Havana. And the remainder of the force at Guantanamo. There they combined to form the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade in early June under Karmany, and the United States Marines fanned out in Oriente Province. Occupying 26 towns and controlling all rail traffic in the area. The Marines protected United States sugar plantations. And El Cobre until late July when the Cuban government was able to clamp down on the revolt. Another 1st Marine Brigade. Was created once again during the Occupation of Haiti. This brigade, however, was not considered a “provisional” unit and maintained a permanent establishment in Haiti from 1915 to 1934. The 1st Marine Brigade was considered a separate unit lineage, and it was reactivated in 1941 and expanded to form the 1st Marine Division.
