This is a very nice example of a Large Variation of a Japanese Cavalry Officer’s Sword, Type 19 which would have been in service all the way up to World War II. It is mounted with a plated machine made large blade that measures 34 3/8 inches in length by 1 1/16 inches at the widest. The blade remains in nice condition with some minor surface blemishes. It wears a very nicely detailed pommel which frames a lovely horn hilt that although only a portion of the twisted wire remains, has survived in very healthy condition. The hilt also features a lovely floral motif and is accentuated with a beautiful silver family mon on the backstrap. The metal plated scabbard has some light flaking, particularly where it was hand carried, but does remain in very good serviceable condition. Overall measuring 42 5/8 inches in length. A white enameled crowned eagle with spread wings, heading left is superimposed on the cross. Reverse: white framed cross, granular, without enamel and bearing the motto: ZA : OJCZY : ZNE : I / NARÓD (for Country and Nation) on the arms. Central medallion: white, with entwined cipher RP (Rzeczpospolita Polska Republic of Poland), surrounded by a green laurel wreath. Star: eight sets of plain sliver rays. Superimposed is the cross, like the reverse of the badge, but without ball finials, the arms are red enameled and with gilt, shell-like flames between. This is an outstanding example of a Japanese Army Officer’s Combat Sword Belt which dates from the World War II Era. It is constructed of heavy canvas with leather trim and metal fittings. The canvas has survived in extremely nice, healthy condition as has all the leather fittings with all their stitching still tightly intact.
