US Navy Good Conduct & Traceable Yangtze Service Medal Group to Machinist Mate William A. Marth was born in Lynden, WA, on December 10, 1900. He enlisted in the Navy on December 21, 1920 in Seattle, Washington. At the completion of his first enlistment, he was awarded this Navy Good Conduct Medal on December 20, 1924. He reenlisted on January 6, 1925 and was briefly stationed aboard the USS Nitro before being assigned to the USS Sicard (destroyer). Sicard began frequently patrolling Chinese waters due to the fighting which accompanied Chiang Kai-shek’s and the Kuomintang’s Northern Expedition against Chinese warlords. Her service in the Yangtze Patrol included stints in October 1926, from March to May 1927, in June 1927, and from July to August 1927. In 1928, Marth transferred to the USS Henderson and the USS Argonne before completing his enlistment in January 1929. He was then award led a second award to the Navy Conduct Medal (clasp engraved “USS Argonne”). Marth the reenlisted a second time in April 1929, serving aboard USS Rigel, USS Holland, USS Louisville, USS Rolland and USS Mahopac. In 1933, he received the third award of the Navy Good Conduct Medal (clasp engraved “1933”) before extending his reenlistment for 3 additional years. Group includes (1) Wrap Brooch Navy Good Conduct Medal, officially hand engraved CSC / 719137 /William / Albert Marth / U. / Doyen #280 / 20 Dec. 1924″ with two pin-back bars: -1st Bar: officially engraved “U. Argonne” on the obverse and “C. 1929″ on the reverse -2nd Bar: officially engraved on the observe “1933” and “William Albert Marth” on the reverse (2) Wrap Brooch Navy Yangtze Service Medal “Mno. 5037, which traces to Marth. (3) Veterans of Foreign Wars Medal (5) 1/2 Pin-Back Navy Good Conduct & Yangtze Service Medal Ribbon Bar All pieces retain their original ribbons. Group comes with a complete color photocopy of Marth’s Service Record, including copies of the transmittal letter for the Yangtze Medal.
