This is the Banana War era summer service khaki United States Marine Corps. Worn by Private Burleigh M. Odum formerly named John M. King who served with the Marine Corps from 27 June 1927 up until his honorable discharge on 6 September 1933. When the USMC muster roles became available, I was pleased to find his history well documented. I have the greatest amount of respect for these men- hence why I collect items that keep their names and their heroics alive. My items were obtained from the family directly or from a collector who obtained it directly from reputable sources. Therefore, other than stating the item is displayed on a size 38 mannequin, I will not give out specific sizes. I do not feel these to be reenactor pieces, nor Halloween costumes. If you are a collector with a mannequin display, I restate that this is displayed on a 38 mannequin- the typical larger size for the Banana War era Marine. The following records are available online via Ancestry. Com’s USMC Muster Rolls. Before purchasing, please feel free to check the records yourself. To expedite the service history, I will touch upon the highlights of his career. A brief service summary is included with this piece. 27 June 1927: D Company, Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. 29 September 1927: Sea School, Norfolk, VA. 12 November 1927: Marine Detachment, USS Lexington CV-2, MEMBER OF FIRST CREW ON LADY LEX! 7 September 1928: Did not rifle qualify on Lexington. This rare style pattern 1929 summer service blouse and is name stamped to Mr. Odum (BM Odum- name stamped in shoulder of blouse) and displays nicely. It has been stored in a humidity controlled collection for ten years now. The blouse has no odors and is as right as rain. It does show slight toning due to age and has a toning area that goes down the back of one sleeve. The service EGAs on the lapels are matching Pattern 1920 pieces with round roller nuts (one seems to be a replacement roller). This blouse is a scarce piece in its own right as it is a rare Pattern 1929 with its original p1920 EGAs. Given this was a Sea Detachment Marine on board the Lady Lex’s first crew and a Gunboat in China makes it that much more special. If you have any further questions about this item, please let me know. It comes from a smoke free home and was properly stored in a humidity and temperature controlled collection. Its SIMILAR TO WW1 / 1914 FLYING COAT Guaranteed VERY OLD BARNSTORMER FLYING COAT OF GERMANY GUARANTEED PRE 1935!!!!!!!! US 46 – 48 – very heavy large sized. Its an very heavy duty coat with some kind of drapery/heavy woolen material which is known in apperance in 1880 – 1900! The coat is outside heavy duty wool of finest durable workmenship. The darkbrown colour is a bit broken in. The inside is sheepskin top till down. The coat itself is one of the oldest coats I have ever owned. I cant date the coat exactly only by my knowlege / appearance and what I know from former owner. The fur is durable with NO hairloss-issue. The coat has some minor repairs and some mothing which is hardly noticeble. As you can see down the pictures all flying coats of WW1 were tailor made and are different to appearance, which is hard to differ… I do discribe this in this case as a flying coat as undentified and very very old coat from pre 1935 – guaranteed!!!! Very hard to find item. I bet there is a person out there which fits perfectly in this coat – – makes a great gentleman out of anybody who comes around with this one and nice suited look as well… Measurements: Shoulder: 20.5 inch / 52 cm Arm length: 24 inch / 61 cm Back Length: 48.5 inch / 123 cm Armpit to Armpit (chest across): 25.5 inch / 65 cm.
