The Marine Corps version of the Spanish Campaign Medal was created in June 1908 and issued to any member of either the Navy or Marine Corps who had served in the Philippine Islands between the dates of 1 May and 16 August 1898. Crews of select ships were eligible for the medal prior to 1 May. For service in the West Indies, the Navy awarded the West Indies Campaign Medal as well as the Sampson Medal which was authorized by a joint resolution of Congress in 1901. In 1913, the Navy discontinued the award of the West Indies Campaign Medal and extended the criteria of the Spanish Campaign Medal to any member of the Navy or Marine Corps who had served on active duty during the Spanish American War. The Spanish Campaign Medal was a military award of the United States Armed Forces which recognized those members of the U. Military who had served in the SpanishAmerican War. Although a single decoration, there were two versions of the Spanish Campaign Medal, one for members of the United States Army and another for the forces of the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. Early versions of the Spanish Campaign Medal suspended the medal from a gold and red ribbon, but this design was changed in 1913 upon request from Spain that a United States service medal not bear the colors of the Spanish nation. [1] The new medal was suspended from a blue and yellow ribbon. Separate medallions existed for both the Navy and Army. Marine Corps recipients received the Navy version with the seal of the United States Marine Corps on the reverse of the medal. This is an original 1930 signed by Spanish General Francisco Franco. He later became the Spanish dictator from 1939 to 1975. The document is framed with a picture of him and write in Spanish. It measures 10 by 14 inches in the frame. The document by itself measures6.5 by 9 inches. The signature on the photo is a copy, but the document is an original signature. It is in great condition. This was the second helmet developed by the Arsenal of the Artillery in Trubia. It was submitted in 1926 for examination. Spain officially adopted the model in 1930. At once 20.000 pieces were ordered. The helmet is made in 1.1 mm thick Röchling steel. This helmet was also known as the helmet with wings (con ala). Madrid, Guernica, Bilbao, Barcelona, international brigades. Some also indicate it as an M38. The Eibar helmet is named for the Basque city where they were manufactured. Its officially known as the Model 1934 and is one of the harder to find helmets worn during the Spanish Civil War. The front has an attachment for a badge, meaning it was used by the troops of general Franco. The badge was introduced in 1942. It has a nice chinstrap and smooth original color.
