#29 POLAND POLISH ORDER OF THE VIRTUTI MILITARI. 4th class Gold gilt, no number WTORNIK. Cross with no enamel on the eagle. It was required to wear the highest decoration awarded on dress uniform on a daily basis. As a result, original VMs were lost, damaged. Presented here for your consideration is an excellent example of such a replacement cross made by Knedler with a British made suspension ring. Other jewelers made their versions even in sterling silver and pure gold which were of superb quality for recipients who could afford the price. Poland being very poor at that time, made the government cross in cheap metal. I could never accept the fact that the highest decoration for personal valor was made in such a cheap production process. Even now, the III Republic makes them in gold or silver gilt.
