The culmination of multipurpose forestry axe. Finnish people have used and relied on axes thousands of years and this is culmination of that use and continuous development, honed to perfection. Axe was tool to choose to when puukko was not tool enough. It was used from cutting down trees in forest to building log houses and anything in between. Finnish woodworkers had reputation with making long lasting quality log houses and they needed good tools (axes) for that. Good example, one of United States oldest wood building still standing, was made by Finns, C. This is very rarely seen variant of this axe model, Finnish army (SA-stamp) “Pioneerikirves”, pioneers/engineers axe, note that original hole in middle. Good condition blade, need sharpening of course. Finnish axe heads looks often very beaten up when used because of mushroomed poll, but that is partly designed feature. Poll of these is not meant for hitting anything other than wood wedges or wooden dowels and stakes (soft targets), but as designers knew, these axes were going to be misused as (sledge)hammers and as wedges anyway, they made that poll very very soft for protecting eye from crushing and misshaping and also for giving direct visual feedback to user. Different parts of axe head are heat treated differently and actual blade part is laminated different material, they really knew what they were doing when making these! All Finnish axe makers had exactly similar models, it is not always possible to distinguish Billnäs, Kellokoski or Strömfors from each other when stamp is not visible, but here Billnäs stamp is clearly visible. Original condition, not painted, just oiled. No sharpening done by me, but this still is sharp enough to cut yourself if you are not careful. Included are directions for making proper handle for Finnish axe, which differs from any other style of axes. Usually most people have no clue how to put handle to finnish model axe head and end result is axe that looks stupid and does not work as intended. Sample of what can be done with axe like this. Study images carefully as they are most important part of description, ask more if needed. Ask if anything uncertain. Check out my other items too!
