M38 folding rifle bayonet – 1st type. Has the original locking lever, not the later push button type. Blade has about 60% of the bluing, while the handle is 80-90%, no pitting. Blade has been sharpened. Wooden grips are tight and in very good condition. Blade is about as tight as these types of folding bayonet can be. Blade locking mechanism is very good, bayonet locking mechanism is also very good. 1st type scabbard with about 50% bluing ion very god condition. Bayonet fits well in scabbard. This is a very nice example of a Japanese Naval Officer’s Kai Gunto Sword. It is mounted with a beautiful blade which wears a cutting edge that measures 23 3/16 inches in length. The blade has survived in very nice condition with only some minor surface blemishes and boasts a fabulously active wavy temper line that extends to the tip on either side. The tang is signed which translates to “TANIGAWA ISSHIN “. The hilt and all the fittings also remain very nice, healthy and clean in their condition. The scabbard wears a beautiful shagreen covering that although reflects surface wear, does remain healthy. The scabbard is also mounted with pretty detailed fittings which continue to wear traces of their original gold wash. Overall measuring 38 1/2 inches in length.
