1918 KEUFFEL & ESSER Young & Sons Dept, Naval Transit from US TARBELL No. 142
This Antique Naval Transit is off the destroyer USN Tarbell. Note open-mount four-inch guns (only the forward one being fitted with a shield), the 3/23 antiaircraft gun just aft of mount one, banks of torpedo tubes (two three-tube mounts per side), and unshaded number 142 at her bow. The four-story Keuffel and Esser Manufacturing Complex in Hoboken, New Jersey, was completed four years later. [2] K&E was incorporated in 1889. From 1889 until World War II, K&E employed “Spider Lady” Mary Pfeiffer to manage a “spider ranch” for the firm. It produced strands of spider web used in making crosshairs for telescopic sights. In 1892, the company commissioned the architecture firm of De Lomos & Cordes to build a showroom and offices at 127 Fulton Street in Manhattan. [3] The firm designed an eight-story brick and terracotta building in the Renaissance Revival style. The building was completed in 1893, and the company occupied it until 1961. It was designated a New York City landmark in 2005. In the first decade of the 20th century, Keuffel and Esser introduced a new line of surveying instruments based on the work of John Paoli, an Italian immigrant in Hoboken. A new Keuffel and Esser Manufacturing Complex was built in 1906, after the previous building was destroyed by fire. [2] The building was converted to housing in 1975 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 12, 1985. K&E acquired instrument maker Young & Sons of Philadelphia in 1918 and made it a department of the firm, retaining the brand name for a time. The instrument is in excellent condition, missing lens cap. The wooden box is wholly intact but it does have some issues. It is missing the key, missing name tag, missing 1 original screw on latch hook. It is missing plumb Bob, missing compass. It has all the points. The points pouch attached inside the door the snap came apart I have the parts.

1938, ARMY LEVEL PRIZE, BRONZE, RIFLE COMPETITION, INFANTRY, NAMED, w/RESEARCH. This 1939 Infantry Army Level Prize for Rifle Competition was awarded to Private First Class John B. Morrissey, Company I, 107. SGT Morrissey was born on 30 January, 1908, Pocatello, Idaho. SGT Morrissey enlisted on 21 January 1936. When John Bacon Morrissey was born on January 30, 1908, in Pocatello, Idaho, his father, Harry, was 30 and his mother, Florence, was 23. He had two sons and two daughters with Anna R Morrissey. He died on February 3, 1982, in Aberdeen, Maryland, at the age of 74. These interwar Army marksmanship badges are highly sought after among collectors. We will include printed copies of the research artifacts. We are limited to 12 images, so there are more artifacts than what is displayed here. This Army level prize consists of three parts. Top bar that indicated either Army level or Corps / department level competition and served as a brooch to affix the assembled device to the uniform. The top bar is squared ended and ornamented with oak leaves, and was always worn with this bronze clasp and an enameled planchet prior to WWII. The top bar or brooch is a pin back with a functional rotating clasp closure. The second portion consists of an intermediate clasp of crossed arms to indicate the type of weapon that was used to earn the award rifle, pistol, or, soon thereafter, automatic weapons. In this case it has crossed rifles. The third, lower piece is a planchet, that when enameled, told the arm or the type of service, in this case, blue for Infantry. The central design is a bow and a pair of arrows. The planchet consists of three concentric designs. 0625 in diameter, displays a compound bow and two crossed arrows, a symbol of marksmanship. Outside of that is a center ring, 015 in width, which displays 13 stars. An oak-leaf wreath executed in bronze surrounds the entire design, making the planchet 1-1/2 in width. The combatant arms had bronze stars with the ring enameled in blue for Infantry.

USS Rizal (DD–174) was a Wickes-class destroyer in the United States Navy following World War I. She was named for José Rizal, a Filipino patriot, and the National Hero of the Philippines. Joining the Pacific Fleet upon commissioning, Rizal cruised along the United States west coast into 1920 on exercises and training duty. Subsequently modified for service as a light minelayer, she was classified DM-14 on 17 July 1920. Rizal departed San Diego on 25 March 1920 for the Far East. With Filipinos constituting the majority of her crew, Rizal remained on the Asiatic Station for ten years. She spent long months anchored in Chinese ports during the spring, summer, and autumn months. Her most frequent ports of call were Shanghai, Chefoo, Chinwangtao, and Hong Kong. Rizal cruised eastward to Apra Harbor, Guam, during November 1928, and visited Yokohama, Japan, from 11 to 20 April 1929. Rizal spent each winter generally from November through March, anchored in Manila Bay. She was docked annually at Olongapo and upon resuming active service each spring operated in Philippine waters. Ordered home late in 1930, Rizal departed Manila on 11 December 1930 for Guam, Honolulu, and San Diego. She decommissioned on 20 August 1931 at San Diego and was towed northward to Mare Island on 31 August 1931 by the minesweeper USS Tern to be placed in reserve.
