THE SWEDISH PATRIOTIC SOCIETY FOR ENCOURAGEMENT OF THE ARTS, CRAFTS AND THE COUNTRY’S INDUSTRIES WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE MID 18th CENTURY. THE SOCIETY WAS GRANTED ITS ARTICLES AND THE PREFIX “ROYAL” BY KING GUSTAF III IN 1772. THE SOCIETY WAS GIVEN PERMISSION TO ISSUE MEDALS IN 1802, AND CONFERRED THE RIGHT TO WEAR THE MEDALS TO THE RECIPIENT. THE SOCIETY WAS A FOCAL POINT FOR PERSONS OF PROMINENCE IN THE FIELDS OF GOVERNMENT, TRADE, SCIENCE, AGRICULTURE AND INDUSTRY, AND GAVE THE SOCIETY MEMBERS A VENUE TO DISCUSS NEW DEVELOPMENTS AND DISCOVERIES AND THEIR APPLICATION IN THEIR VARIOUS FIELDS. 1950, DEPICTED ON THE MEDAL’S OBVERSE, WAS THE OLDEST AND SECOND-LONGEST REIGNING MONARCH OF SWEDEN. A CONSERVATIVE, HE WAS THE LAST MONARCH TO BE SUPREME HEAD OF THE SWEDISH ARMED FORCES AND TO INTERVENE DIRECTLY IN THE POLITICS OF HIS NATION. ASCENDING TO THE THRONE IN 1907, HE REPLACED LIBERAL PRIME MINISTER KARL STAAF IN 1914. GUSTAF PLACED A FIGUREHEAD, HJALMAR HAMARSKÖLD IN THE POSITION WHO REMAINED IN PLACE THROUGHOUT MOST OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR. DURING WWI GUSTAF HELD A PRO-GERMAN ANTI-COMMUNIST STANCE, ALTHOUGH OFFICIALLY SWEDEN REMIANED NUETRAL. LIBERALS AND SOCIAL DEMOCRATS SUCCEDED IN FORMING A NEW GOVERNMENT IN 1917 UNDER NILS EDÉN, WHO STRIPPED THE KING OF HIS QUASI-ABSOLUTE POWERS, ENACTED EQUAL SUFFRAGE FOR WOMEN, AND TRANSITIONED SWEDEN TO A PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY. THE ROYAL PREROGATIVES CONTINUED TO BE EXERCISED BY GUSTAF V, THE LAST SWEDISH MONARCH TO DO SO, AND THOSE POWERS WERE ULTIMATELY ABOLISHED BY PARLIAMENT IN 1974. GUSTAF WAS POPULAR THROUGHOUT HIS REIGN, AND CONCEDED TO THE PRINICPALS OF PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY AND TO BEING THE FIGUREHEAD OF THE COUNTRY. IN 1943, THE YEAR THIS MEDAL WAS AWARDED, SWEDEN WAS AGAIN NUETRAL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR. ALTHOUGH GUSTAF URGED THE COALITION GOVERNMENT OF SWEDEN TO GIVE IN TO NAZI GERMANY’S LOGISTICS REQUESTS, HE APPARENTLY DID NOT SUPPORT FACISM OR THE NAZIS, AND TO REFUSE THEM WOULD HAVE POSSIBLY PROVOKED AN INVASION. In any case, they are just like I bought them. The circumstances surrounding Thompsons Kings Police Medal for Gallantry. At midnight on July 28, 1936, a small patrol of Palestine Police officers were fired upon by a group of Palestinians near the Nablus hills. The ensuing battle would last all day and only ended after British troops with tanks and airplanes made a counter attack. According to contemporary newspaper reports this skirmish was [t]he severest battle since the beginning of the Arab general strike against Jewish immigration 101 days ago. At least 20 Palestinians and one constable, named Christopher Wren, were killed during this clash. British Constable Horace William Henry Thompson was one of three Palestine Police officers recognized for his courageous conduct during this engagement. The others were Sergeant Hamish Ian McLeod and Constable David Farrar. According to the Palestine Police Old Comrades Association newsletter No. 118, March 1980 p 44-47 there were 65 KPMs awarded to the Palestine Police, and only 29 were for gallantry.
