RARE Antique USMC NICARAGUA Merito MEDAL OF DISTINCTION Steel Stamping Die JN936. This listing is for the original antique steel stamping die used to make the obverse of the Nicaragua Medal of Distinction. This die made the medals presented to the US Navy and United States Marine Corps members for service in the 1920’s. The octagonal die has dimensions 1 ¼” x 1 ¼” and stands 2 high. Period late 2020s or early 30s. This in an exceptional item, in excellent condition, min stain, with period PFC rank insignia, has buttons of later period (I think). Has four front pockets, epaulets and hanger in the neck. This item is very firm and has been nicely protected and lightly clean. Sleeves are 32.5, armpit to same 19 inches, length from collar rear hem 32 inches. Collar has button holes for EGA (2). The hanger is very firm and the tailor block is strong. The jacket is named to Corporal Joseph F. He joined the U. Marine Corps in 1923 and served as a sea going marine on several battleships and spent time with the 3rd and 4th Marines. Quigley was discharged in 1930. The jacket is in very good condition. There’s a little fading and there’s one small hole behind the neck area. There seems to be a couple of water stains to the bottom area, shown in photos. Jacket is very small in size. One of the Corporal patches has some moth damage. I added the EGAs to complete the jacket, and will be included. The EGAs are bronze and are the correct period and issue for the jacket. Feel free to ask questions or request more photos. This is one of the most RARE maybe unique? Miniature-medal groups I’ve ever collected (acquired in the late 1990s/early 2000s): it’s to a US Marine Corps officer (note absence of a Good Conduct Medal), and reflects service from about 1914 to the early 1930s… And all in the Caribbean or Latin America! The six medals you see here reflect virtually everything the US Marine Corps was operationally committed to (with occasional heavy combat) in this region, from the pre-WWI landing at Vera Cruz, Mexico to the last campaign in Nicaragua. This group was definitely worn many times, as witnessed by the honest wear on the suspension ribbons. Take a good look at all the photos… I always find those little pendants “talking to me” as I imagine this officer’s probably arduous and dangerous service. What a great piece of Marine Corps history!
