ARTIFACT: This is a rare set of pilot (could have also been Navy or Marine Corps) goggles by American Optical Company in its original case. The top of the case reads AVIATION GOGGLES AMERICAN OPTICAL COMPANY with the companys winged logo. The bendable bridge of the goggles is in the shape of two interlocking wings. SIZE: Approximately 2-7/8 height and 7-7/8 width and 3-11/16 depth (case). CONSTRUCTION/MATERIALS: Glass lenses, nickel-plated brass hardware, foam rubber seals, cotton strap; velvet-lined leather-wrapped box. ATTACHMENT: Cotton strap and sliding buckle on goggles; snap on case. ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Army Air Forces collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. CONDITION: 6+ (Fine-Very Fine): The hinging edge of the case has entirely separated, so case is opened not by unsnapping the front but by just lifting the cover from the back. ARTIFACT: This is a Model 1930 Swedish Air Force officer pilot dagger with a hanger and portepee, or sword knot. The dagger comes in its original gilt brass and painted wood scabbard, attached to which is a dual hanger (hanger is possibly post-WWII) that has a small winged and crowned propeller medallion. The end of the scabbard is capped in brass with a wonderful feathered or scaled design. The grip is entirely wrapped in brass wire and the pommel is capped with the trio of crowns representing Norway, Sweden and Finland. The guard is simple and squared-off in brass. The bright blade is stiletto-shaped. SIZE: Approximately 13-1/4 in length and 3-1/2 in width (at guard); blade only: 9-1/8 in length (including ricasso) and 3/4 in width; scabbard only: approximately 9-1/2 in length and 15/16 in width; hanger has a 7-5/8 drop from scabbard; about 13-1/2 total length (while in scabbard). CONSTRUCTION/MATERIALS: Steel blade, wire-wrapped grip, gilt brass, rayon/cotton/nylon knot; leather washer; gilt brass and painted wood scabbard. ATTACHMENT: Hangers, sword knot. #30 POLAND POLISH WWII POLISH AIR FORCE ORDER OF THE VIRTUTI MILITARI, #9198, 5th class, Silver gilt worn, superb enamels. Jozef Zawadzki who was attached to the 304th Slask Bomber Squadron as a Pilot observer during the Battle of Britain. Very rare 2nd type VM. A small number of these 5th class VMs were left over from 1921 production run and awarded until the supply ran out with the last number being 9,999. After that, VMs were never machine stamped with numbers. New supply of VMs were ordered from Spinks, Rubin in Palestine, in Italy and Polish Tech jewelers in London. Mounted on a old original Swiss made ribbon. New replacement ribbon will be supplied. Very rare VM award for Polish Air Force members. It is one of 1,500 crosses awarded during WWII which were made in the 1920’s. Superb example of Polish Military History during WWII. It maybe of some interest to those who are not familiar with Polish History to know that thousands of VM recipients from the WWI era also fought in the 1939 campaign. The where killed on the battlefield in full uniform or captured. In once place at one time at Katyn, 22,000 thousand Polish officers and NCOs were shot by the Soviets.
