Original late 1920’s USMC officer photo of Captain Walter Sweet, 8″ x 10″. Sweet (as a Gunnery Sergeant) was awarded the Navy Cross and Distinguished Service Cross for actions with the 16th Company, 5th Marine Regiment at Chateau-Thierry for taking out two machineguns and a mortar nest. He was also awarded 3 Silver Star Citations and the French Croix de Guerre. He is seen with his award ribbons, droop wing EGAs, French fourragere, and shooting badges. He enlisted in 1911 and was a veteran of many Banana Wars.. He served nearly 28 years. Please pay upon receipt of invoice.

During the United States occupation of Haiti in 1919 the United States Marine Corps stationed Marine Observation units using HS-1 and HS-2 aircraft in what became Bowen Field.

From an estate, these were locked away in a cedar chest for many decades. One photo is marked 1923, so the time frame is 1922-23. Also included are another 25 snapshots taken on land of places and people which I presume were encounters along the way. I’m also including the stack of negatives that was stored with these photos, as they appear to match. Most of these photos are snapshot size at about 3 1/2″ by 2 1/2″.
