An original silver gelatin photograph circa 1934 of Peking and Shanghai Marines and other members of International Legations (British, French and Italian). Third from the right (lower right) is the post adjutant and morale officer of Headquarters Detachment, American Legation, Peking, China, Evans F. Seen wearing the Navy Cross for his actions in Nicaragua in 1930. In 1942, he and his “Raiders” were on Makin Island (second Navy Cross) and was later leading the famed “Long Patrol” on Guadalcanal. Carlson is arguably the father of Marine Special Operations. Photo appears to be the participants of the International Small Bore Rifle Competition and what looks like the international commanders. Rixey, the Legation Commanding Officer is center, behind the Johnson Trophy. Here is where Carlson studied the Chinese language, he would return in 1937 and study Chinese guerrilla tactics and the Japanese and where was born the term “Gung-ho” that he used as the Raiders motto. A rare photo of a very famous Marine officer. Measures 8-3/8″ x 6-1/2″. Combined invoice will be sent at auctions end.

The Legation Guard News Annual, 1931. Volume 1, Number 5. Printed in Peking, China : The Standard Press, 1931? USMC, Editor -in- Chief. Measures about 11&1/2″ by 8&1/2″ , Pages numbered to 85, plus advertising. Basically a yearbook of the tour and activities and history. Many black & white photos. Has a puncture through the entire book but, with no loss of text, as the pages have been pressed down over the years. The cloth binding is very worn and a bit faded and is coming apart and there are some loose pages but it is complete. There is also toning to the pages… A rare addition to your collection. Two 1920 Marine Photo Albums American Legation Peking China 400 Images. Pvt I/c Joseph Hahn was a member of the 4th Marine American Legation at Peking China in 1920. There are 400 photos that really flesh out his service and places he visited and things he saw and experienced. Some were pretty gruesome as pictured but the others paint quite a picture of life at that time and in those places he visited. His journey started in Mare Island California and then to Yokohama and Nagasaki Japan where he photographed spots of interest, next to Cavite, Philippine Islands And finally to Peking, China. In China there were Military Legation troops from many other countries and Pvt Hahn photographed the m too. He photographed everything from daily routine to Outlaw firing squad executions, beheading for robbery, and death by 1000 cuts for rape. One photo I found of special interest is a woman reclining next to a huge anaconda after it had consumed a large meal. B iggest snake I have ever seen. There are many photos of Chinese culture and sacred p laces.
