United States Navy Musician 1st Class 1st Musician Venancio Flores (service #150-97-07 & continuous service certificate #32633) was born September 1st 1886 in Subic, Zambales, Philippine Islands. Venancio enlisted in the Navy United States Navy as a immigrant on August 20th 1908 in Olongapo, Philippines. Seamen Venancio served aboard several early Battleships including the U. He also served many years at the Philadelphia Naval Yard. Musician 1st Class Flores was Honorable Discharged and issued this officially government engraved Good Conduct Medal. He was then transferred to inactive duty on September 13th 1920 at the Naval Training Station, Newport Rhode Island. M1C Flores was subsequently discharged from the Navy on September 22nd 1924. United States Navy Musician 1st Class 1st Musician Venancio Flores passed away in May 1968 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ORIGINAL WORLD WAR I UNITED STATES NAVY GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, W/ F ULL WRAP BROOCH. RIBBON DRAPE & BAR TESTED U. The Navy Good Conduct Medal is the oldest Good Conduct Medal, dating back to 26 April 1869. There have been a total of four versions of the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the first version of which was issued from 1870 to 1884. The original Navy Good Conduct Medal was also not worn on a uniform, but issued with discharge papers as a badge to present during reenlistment. A sailor in the Navy received a new Good Conduct Medal for each honorable enlistment completed. The second version of the Navy Good Conduct Medal was issued between 1880 and 1884. The medal was considered a “transitional decoration” and was the first of the Good Conduct Medals to be worn on a uniform. The medal was phased out by 1885 and a new medal issued between 1885 and 1961. The new medal was a Good Conduct medallion suspended from an all red ribbon. Enlistment bars, denoting each honorable enlistment completed, were pinned on the ribbon as attachments. There was slight oddity during the SpanishAmerican War when the Navy created the Specially Meritorious Service Medal which also had an all red suspension and service ribbon. There were recorded cases of Navy enlisted personnel who were awarded both the Good Conduct Medal and the Specially Meritorious Service Medal who wore two red service ribbons on their Navy service uniforms. This is one of the rare times in the history of U. Military awards that two awards had identical ribbons. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you! The Pennsylvania-class consisted of two super-dreadnought battleships built for the United States Navy just before the First World War. The ships were named Pennsylvania and Arizona, after the American states of the same names. They constituted the United States’ second battleship design to adhere to the “all or nothing” armor scheme, and were the newest American capital ships when the United States entered the First World War. During the 1920s and 1930s, Pennsylvania served as the flagship of first the Atlantic Fleet, and after it was merged with the Pacific Fleet in 1921, the Battle Fleet. Pennsylvania was occupied with a peacetime routine of training exercises (including the annual Fleet problems), port visits, and foreign cruises, including a visit to Australia in 1925. She suffered relatively minor damage in the attack, being protected from torpedoes by the drydock. Pennsylvania joined the fleet in a series of amphibious operations, primarily tasked with providing gunfire support. The first of these, the Aleutian Islands Campaign, took place in mid-1943, and was followed by an attack on Makin later that year. During 1944, she supported the landings on Kwajalein and Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands and the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign, including the Battles of Saipan, Guam, Peleliu, and Battle of Angaur. During the Battle of Okinawa, she was torpedoed by a Japanese torpedo bomber and badly damaged, forcing her to withdraw for repairs days before the end of the war. Allocated to the target fleet for the Operation Crossroads nuclear tests in 1946, Pennsylvania was repaired only enough to allow her to make the voyage to the test site, Bikini Atoll. She survived both blasts, but was badly contaminated with radioactive fallout from the second test, and so was towed to Kwajalein, where she was studied for the next year and a half. The front of the album itself has a photo of the USS Pennsylvania- Flagship of the US Fleet- in it. In the beginning are the signatures addresses and comments from 41 of his fellow sailors. He has filled out 7 pages of the log/ diary that follow the signature pages. The photos are all original snapshot photos with some exceptions here and there (some are real photo postcards, etc)- the majority are original snapshots. I counted just over 140 photos. They are all held in place with corner tabs so theyre not glued in at all. US fleet anchored in Panama, Several of Panama City/ Old Panama, Refueling Destroyer #340, Pennsy in Battle Maneuvers, Sailors swimming in the bay, Beer for all! Sailors/ soldiers on parade/ landing force, May 1934 in New York City (Parade up 5th Ave, Battle Force entering the Hudson River, some buildings including the Empire State Building). Shells laid out on deck, guns firing at night, Boxing match on board, etc etc. The album itself has some wear but is in pretty nice shape yet. The photos are excellent. There are some that are in here loose and might not be on the correct pages, and there are some here and there that seem to be missing but not many. Take a look at my feedback to see how other buyers liked my previous US Navy Photo albums. You will have a hard time finding one like this again. The album is approximately 13.5″ x9″ x 1 and it has approximately 270 black and white period photographs held in with paper corners. Approximately 120 are on or of the Pennsylvania herself and other U. Warships she came in contact with. I would guess another 20 to 30 are of sailors on the beach. Most of the photos have captions under them identifying ships or crew members. But the sailor himself is not identified. Many of these photos are original and unpublished and I really think they are exceptional. Around a half dozen of the photos are missing. I see this leather album cover is unique with heavy embossing on a nautical theme with the Pennsylvania photo in the center and it is in pretty good condition, but the binding straps look to be replacements for the usual rawhide ones. But the photos are the most important thing and they are very nice. Some of the interesting photos are first photo from the bow with a lot of detail of the fore turrets and the bridge. The #5 shot from the bridge showing the fore turrets. And the last photo is rare because it is from inside the 14 gun turret #4, which seems to be this sailor’s action station. I have saved this for years and now I realize I need to clear out some space for different interests. I will pack it back up very well. Please check my other auctions.
