A LATE ISSUE ORIGINAL US CAVALRY SADDLE CLOTH FOR A TROOPER IN “I” TROOP OF THE 4th CAVALRY. IT HAS A YELLOW LEATHER NUMBER “4” AND THE LETTER “I” IN THE CORNER. THEY WERE GLUED IN PLACE PERHAPS DURING THE PERIOD OF USE OR BY A MORE RECENT COLLECTOR OR REENACTOR. THE LETTERS ARE WELL MADE AND ARE 1 AND 3/4 INCH HIGH. THEY SEEM TO HAVE BEEN THERE FOR A LONG TIME. ON THE INSIDE THERE IS A VERY WELL PRESERVED WHITE PAINT SET OF CROSS SWORDS WITH THE “4” AND “I” BELOW AS WELL AS A TROOPER NUMBER. ONE CAN SEE THE SEWING HOLES OF THE ORIGINAL “4” AND “I” IN THE CLOTH. THERE IS NO OTHER ISSUE OR MANUFACTURE MARKING THAT I COULD FIND. THE HEAVY WEB CANVAS CLOTH IS DIRTY ON THE OUTSIDE FROM FIELD USE. IT SHOWS A LOT OF GREENISH COLOR SOILING AND I DO NOT KNOW IF IT COULD BE CLEANED. MINOR FRAYING ON THE EDGE, PARTICULARLY WHERE THE STIRRUP STRAPS RUBBED THE CLOTH. THE STITCHING IS SOLID. THIS SADDLE CLOTH LOOKS GREAT WITH A 1928 McCLELLAN SADDLE WITH FULL SKIRT AS IT HIDES MUCH OF THE SOILING. THE INSIDE IS FAIRLY CLEAN AS IT WAS PROTECTED BY THE SADDLE WOOL BLANKET BUT CLEARLY THIS CLOTH WAS USED IN THE FIELD. THE CLOTH MEASURES APPROXIMATELY 21 x 31 INCH AT THE WIDEST POINT. NOTE THAT THE SADDLE STAND AND OTHER PROP SHOWN IN THE PICTURES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING. THIS LISTING IS ONLY FOR THE SADDLE CLOTH DESCRIBED ABOVE. This is a vintage Hungarian Cruciform Bayonet with the original matching scabbard. The cross-shaped blade is marked with the Hungarian crest and what appears to be F. F inside a shield. The blade of this bayonet is in beautiful original unrestored condition with wonderful patina. The total length of the bayonet is 22.5 inches, with the blade being 18 inches long. There are no nicks and the blade point is excellent. The push button in the pommel works fine. The muzzle ring measures 15mm. The grooved wood grip has some indentations on the back, but otherwise is in good condition. There is light rust on the crossguard and pommel. The steel scabbard shows signs of wear with some scratches and light rust spots, but is still strong and sturdy. The scabbard is 19.25 inches long. The photo album measures 13 x 10 and is in good condition with very worn covers, back cover detached and a couple of loose pages but all the photos are in good condition and are mounted on pages with adhesive and exhibit excellent clarity. This photo album was acquired from a large lot of photos once owned by RAYMOND A. STOCKWELL went on to the rank of 1st Lt. And on January 6th, 1942 along with two fellow crewmen was killed in a crash of a twin-engine Beechcraft F-2 Plane after it crashed head-on into Pilot Rock near Ashland, Oregon killing all aboard.
