A beautiful fifteen inch, boxwood & lacquered brass, parallel rule for navigational use by W H Harling, 47 Finsbury, London. The makers were at this address in the early 1900s. It has a fine, fitted mahogany box. Owned by Vice Admiral Sir Cecil Charles Hughes-Hallett with a brass nameplate attached to one end. This item was given to us by the daughter of Admiral Hughes-Hallett. Sir Cecil Charles Hughes-Hallett. Born on 6 April 1898, Charles Hughes-Hallett was educated at Bedford School, Emmanuel College, Cambridge, the Royal Naval College, Osborne and at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He served in the Royal Navy during the First World War and was present at the Battle of the Dardanelles and at the Battle of Jutland. After distinguished service during the Second World War he was appointed as Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleet between 1950 and 1951. He was appointed as Head of British Naval Mission, Washington between 1952 and 1954. Very nice embossed cardstock covers with tassel cord binding. A horse drawn artillery battery, many of these men went on to serve in WWII, 1937 menus list Captain Hamilton Searight, who died during the Baatan death march in 1942. 5.5″ x 7″ each only 4 pages showing menu and roster.

Jansen who served during the American colonization of the Philippines. His primary home address is 3 Wolcott Road Winchester, Mass. In one particular letter Colonel Jansen is taken to a remote island in the Philippines by submarine where he is stationed by himself. The letters cover the years 1918 through the 1920’s. Great cancellation marks throughout with good content. This is a rare glimpse from of American control and occupation of the Filipino people and territory.
