Plates such as this are hard to find from a time when the United States Military still had a large amount of horses and had not fully mechanized. In 1920 Marine Corps Schools were founded in order “to make this post and whole Marine Corps a great University” Quantico would see further expansion during World War II in training for amphibious warfare. To this date most Marine Officers receive training at the revered Quantico Base. This is a very rare piece of United States Marine Corps History. Permit measures 8.9 wide by 3.5 inches high. An original, 1895 Prussian Reserve Officer, Pioneer Battalion Helmet Plate. Very fine quality with silver gilt finish. There is modest wear on the contact points and a dark spot on the lower right side of the eagle. The eagle has mounting holes for a reserve cross but there is np evidence that one was ever mounted. The threaded mounting posts along with the original washers and nuts are in place. From a 1960’s-70’s imperial Collection. Republic of Cuba, Order of Carlos Manuel Cespedes. Grand Commander’s Breast Plate in. Plate is in good, uncleanned, condition, with the original pin and brooch present in the reverse and working properly. The central cap on the reverse is missing. On the obvserse, the bust of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes is surrounded by a blue-enamel ring with the legend: “CARLOS MANUEL DE CESPEDES / 1868″. The Cuban Order of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes was instituted in April 1926, to honour the Cuban planter who freed his slaves and made the Declaration of Cuban Independence in 1868, starting the Ten Years’ War. Cespedes acted as’First President of the Republic of Cuba in Arms’, leading the movement for independence from the Spanish and the freedom of slaves. Deposed in 1873 via a leadership coup, he was killed by the Spanish during 1874 whilst in a mountain refuge. The Order is named in his honour and was renewed and modified during 1959 by Fidel Castro. Together with the Order, his portrait features upon the Cuban 100 peso banknote.
