An extremely rare example of the Nicaraguan Medal of Distinction. This medal was the second highest of four decorations that were awarded by the government of Nicaragua to US Navy and Marine Corps personnel for service in that country in the late 1920s and early 1930s. These decorations were presented in very limited numbers and rarely come on the market. I have seen a several examples of the Medal for Merit offered for sale over the years but have never seen any of the other decorations offered in a public sale. The Medal of Distinction offered here is marked 14k (as shown in the photo) but does not have any other marking, so the actual maker is unknown. The silk ribbon is authentic and correct for the medal but due to its age it cant be fitted to the medal ring without splitting. The two documents shown are ones that I copied from USMC correspondence files in the US National Archives in Washington and have not been previously published. ORIGINAL UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS SECOND NICARAGUAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, W/ LOCKING CATCH SPLIT WRAP BROOCH. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN. The Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal is a campaign medal of the United States Navy & Marine Corps which was authorized by an act of the United States Congress on 8 November 1929. The Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal was awarded for service during operations in Nicaragua from 1926 to 1933. An earlier campaign medal, the Nicaraguan Campaign Medal, was awarded for service in Nicaragua 1912. The Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal was considered a separate award from the first version of the medal and Navy regulations permitted the receipt and wear of both decorations, if so authorized. Southerland, who had been in overall command of both Nicaraguan campaigns, was the first recipient of both versions of the Nicaraguan Campaign Medal. The Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal appeared as a medal suspended from a red ribbon with several white stripes. The medal displayed a woman (representing Columbia), armed with a sword, defending two other figures with a cloak. The medal bore the words Second Nicaraguan Campaign with the dates 1926 1930 displayed on the medals edges (although the medal was authorized until 1933). No devices were authorized. RCAMC Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps Officer’s Mess Uniform – Pre World War 2 – VERY RARE. This Officer’s Mess Uniform was tailored in January, 1934 for Dr. RC Montgomery of Toronto, then serving as a Captain in the pre-war Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. He went on to serve as a senior Officer in England in the Canadian General Hospital unit during the war, treating both Allied soldiers, civilians, and more than a few German POWs. Tailored by Sainthill-Levine & Co. In Toronto, the uniform is wool and satin with cotton lining in the tunic and trousers.
