RARE 1920’s NAMED US NAVY PHOTO ALBUM ERNEST M. FLAHERTY USS WEST VIRGINA. Flaherty retired to Sarasota, FL where I live. Flaherty’s Album with Signed Photos of Admiral Richard Byrd from the famous Antarctica Expedition see. Flaherty was a shipmate and good friend of Admiral Byrd’s. There are NO PHOTOS of Admiral Byrd in this Album. Also, photos of friends and girlfriends. USS West Virginia, a 32,600-ton Colorado class battleship built at Newport News, Virginia, was commissioned in December 1923, the last battleship completed for the United States Navy for nearly two decades. During the 1920s and 1930s, she served in the U. Fleet, taking part in “Fleet Problems” and other exercises as part of the continuing effort to develop tactics and maintain the Navy’s combat readiness. With much of the rest of the Fleet, she deployed to New Zealand and Australia in 1925 in an important demonstration of the Navy’s trans-Pacific strategic “reach”. West Virginia’s base was moved to Pearl Harbor in 1940, and she was there on 7 December 1941, when the Japanese attacked with an overwhelming force of carrier aircraft. In that raid, the battleship was hit by two bombs and at least seven torpedoes, which blew huge holes in her port side. Skillful damage control saved her from capsizing, but she quickly sank to the harbor bottom. More than a hundred of her crew were lost. Salvaged and given temporary repairs at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, in April 1943 West Virginia steamed to the West Coast for final repair and modernization at the Puget Sound Navy Yard. 14″-15″ wide depending on where you measure. The Leather Album Cover is 14″ wide, but the pages extend to 15″ wide. Condition: Album itself is in very poor shape. The Leather is dirty & album areas are stained. Looks like the entire back of the album is missing. Photos are still in good condition. My Consignor did not realize the value of this album and tore out photos he thought were important to sell individually. So, many photos are missing & many pages are torn and photos have been removed. My Consignor no longer knows where the removed photos are located. Pages of the album are lose, falling out, detached, and missing. Any defects not mentioned but visible in the pictures will be considered as “described”. PLEASE let me know if you need to get it sooner.

WWI ANNIN DEFIANCE Baltimore City Flag. Manufactured Circa 1921 3 x 5. For your consideration is this extremely difficult to find and very early example of the Baltimore City Flag. This particular flag was adopted 11 February 1915. This flag was manufactured circa 1921 by ANNIN DEFIANCE. This particular flag is completely sewn. It’s made of Cotton bunting and measures 3ft x 5ft. The grommets are made of zinc. This flag was flown by the city of Baltimore right around WWI. The tag is an early 1920’s tag for ANNIN Defiance and was the first tag type used for Defiance right after the patent ended. This flag is complete. There is staining from being exposed to the elements 100 years ago. I have noticed only 2 small dime sized hole. History of Baltimore City Flag. The monument was constructed in the former colonial era Courthouse Square along North Calvert Street, between East Lexington Street to the north and East Fayette Street to the south, after the second Baltimore City and County Courthouse was constructed on a site farther west across Calvert Street in 1805. Commemorating the soldiers and officers that fell in the defense of the city against the British land and sea attack in the Battle of Baltimore with the Battle of North Point and subsequent Bombardment of Fort McHenry on September 12-13-14th, 1814, during the War of 1812. The memorial was begun with a cornerstone laying one year after the attack on September 12, 1815, (later observed annually as Defenders Day, a city/county/state legal holiday) and completed in 1822, seven years later. The design was by French emigre architect Maximilian Godefroy and five years later was placed as the central figure with the city incorporation date of 1797 underneath on the city’s newly designed oval official seal in 1827. In the 20th century, the monument was also placed over the black and gold colors design from the Calvert family quarters from the shield of the Great Seal of the State of Maryland, in the city flag now flown along with the American and Maryland state flags at all public buildings and many private sites. The field is in the Calvert family colors of black and yellow / gold (sometimes orange) and design, which also appear in the first and fourth quarters of the Maryland state flag taken from the shield of the Calvert-Crossland families coats-of-arms. The flag is blazoned (described in heraldic) terms as follows: Paly of six Or and sable, a bend counterchanged, on an inescutcheon Sable, within an orle of the first, a representation of Baltimore’s Battle Monument Argent. Two other designs were submitted for consideration; both included the Battle Monument and the Calvert arms. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Militaria\1919-38\Original Period Items”. Extremely rare naval aviator wing, owned by John F. Clymer, came with other material from him from an estate clearance about a year ago. Absolutely stunning Robbins pattern wing with straight drop safety catch, and a stop that does not allow the pin to flip all the way back, but only to about 45 degrees. Nearly all the original finish remains. The feather detail is amazing, with clean sharp definition. This is the nicest post WWI wing I have ever had, the ID is solid, I had other things from this officer, born in 1905, listed in the rolls as having joined in 1927. I did not find out much more about him, but the early date matches up well with this pattern of wing badge. 2.75 wide, plus a mm or so. This is the nicest wing of this period you will ever own! S ee image and title for any info, and ask any questions you may have! Items are shown FRONT and BACK where applicable and possible!
