S ARMY ON MEXICAN BORDER 23rd NY INFANTRY N. FANTASTIC ORIGINAL LARGE FELT BANNER CIRCA 1916. Multi piece red, blue & white felt banner measuring approximately 29 inches by 29 inches (presented diagonally). Undated but circa 1916. Features the E Pluribus Unum. Seal of the United States. Condition: Offered as found: Faded, a few small holes, white border partially lacking perhaps other elements as well? , still quite attractive & visually compelling. As far as we can tell, this piece is unique; essentially a piece of folk art created by an unknown artist, quite possibly the wife of a returning veteran. The 23rd Infantry, New York National Guard was part of the 3rd Brigade, 27th Division. On 9 March 1916 Poncho Villa (born as Doroteo Arango) and his band of nearly 500 men attacked the 13th U. Cavalry at Camp Furlong near Columbus, New Mexico. During their retreat they also attacked nearby Columbus, New Mexico, killing several citizens. In response to this attack of US soil President Woodrow Wilson called up over 110,000 men from the National Guards of various states. Since New York had one of the most organized National Guard organizations, many New Yorkers were sent to the Mexican Border in 1916. A Very Unique Mannlicher Carbine Model 95 NCO Bayonet. The NCO Bayonet has the ring hole in the steel handle – much rarer Bayonet Type – see pictures # 5 and #6. This is a rare and very desirable marked M95 Manlicher Bayonet Set from my personal collection. The blade has the CEWG code on the Blade – Picture # 1 – on the other side is the Double Headed Imperial Eagle – picture # 4 – Scabbard has Imperial Double headed Eagle on the Metal tad and CEWG Code. Of the side- -see picture #1 , see picture #1. This Bayonet is a very desirable and hard to find Historic Collectable- , but with the unusual marks – it puts it in a class by itself – it is much more desirable. These bayonets and scabbards were re-conditoned prior to WWII for the German and Austrian Armies using M95 Mannlicher Carbines as substitute Standard. The metal frog hook on the metal scabbards were re-inforced. By brass brazing at the arsenal and then simply painted over the braze with black paint – usually after all their use some of the brass is showing – I prefer to leave orginal, but it would be easy for owners to spot paint again. The Rifles and Bayonets were substitute standard for German Army support troops during WWII and also issued to German Military Police. Note: The blade has not been sharpened since leaving the Gov’t Arsenal. Bayonet buttons for attaching to rifles are always checked and work fine! This Bayonet is for the Model 1895 Mauser Mannlicher Carbine, not the WW 11 K98K Mauser Rifle. GENUINE AND VERY DESIRABLE OLDER MILITARY COLLECTABLE AT A FAIR AND REASONABLE PRICE. 1920’s-30’s Public Health Service Dress Coat and Cover. This is a scarcer coat with an Army style light weight gabardine service dress material. It has nice black piping and is nicely lined. There are no names or maker labels or contract labels inside. Not sure of the size, but it measures at approx size 34-36. The cover is by Wm. No size or ID inside the sweatband, it has nice black piping detail around the band. I believe it is approx. In fine condition: The coat has some spots with moth tracking. The cover has some moth tracking, light blemishing, there is wear to the leather on the chin strap and the visor, the sweatband is mostly separated.
