Reverse stamped in a square with nine Chinese characters “Made by Silver Bureau”, Chinese inscription above in six linked arched circles characters giving the date: “Republic of China Year 9″. This order is also known as. “The Order of the Excellent Crop”. “The Order of the Splendid Harvest”. “The Order of the Bountiful Harvest”. Indicates the importance the government placed on the newly established Republic’s ability to meet the demands of an Agrarian nation to feed its vast population in the face of years of terrible draughts and devastating floods. A good harvest was always an indication of prosperity and civil tranquility during tumultuous times. The award’s centerpiece is a stalk of wheat during various stages of growth. This Order of the Golden Grain (Chia-ho) was instituted on 29 July 1912 by President Yuan Shi- kai for outstanding civil or military achievement. It was conferred in nine (9) classes. The First and Second Classes were distinguished by the badge of the order plus a breast star. The width of the Second Class breast star is smaller in diameter than the First Class breast star. In 1916, a special Second Class was instituted. The badge of the order is a star of eight groups of ascending (white enameled for 1st class) or (silver gilded for second class) rays with a large circular medallion in the center. The medallion contains five standing sheaves of grain in green and yellow enamel on a white enamel background. Surrounding the medallion is a narrow turquoise band edged in gilt with small red, yellow, blue, white, and black dots. These are the colors of the flag of the Chinese Republic, which consisted of five horizontal stripes of red, yellow, blue, white, and black. The breast star is the badge of the order superimposed over a large star of eight groups of ascending rays in faceted silver. The reverse is plain with a hinged vertical pin flanked by a vertical hook pin. Stamped in a square in the center is “Made by Silver Bureau” in Chinese Characters. This order was abolished by the Nationalist Government in 1929 and replaced by the Order of the Brilliant Jade. This is an original full size medal, not a reproduction. This medal was instituted in 1925, and awarded for 12 years cumulative service with the Shanghai Volunteer Corps. Rare China Marine Mess Sergeant’s Tunic – ID’d, circa 1930’s. This tunic is from a grouping of Thomas’s other uniforms, in another collection that is currently not for sale. This is how we have been able to identify this item to Sgt. Thomas, as this item is not individually marked itself. Overall in nice condition, with no areas of mothing and discoloration. One the back of the right sleeve, along the seam, there is a black substance that has stained approx. A 7 long section along the sleeve. There is wear throughout due to use by Thomas. On both sleeves the Mess Sergeant Rank is machine sewn on. Very nice Eagle, Globe and Anchors on both lapels with wear, toning and patina on both. Coat, shoulder and pocket buttons are have similar wear and scuffing with tight stitching on all. The only marking inside the tunic is the number “590” in the center near the collar. XXV (25), 4 January 1936 to 27 June 1936. This wonderful US 15. Infantry weekly periodical was published in Tientsin, China, between January 4. 1936 till June 27, 1936. The collection paginates with 320 pages approx. And measures 12 x 8.75 inches approximately. The periodicals were probably in a binder at one point as two binder holes are present throughout. A previous owner had all the issues rebound in this present binding of green buckram, and Capt. Page is embossed on front cover in gold gilt. It is also curious, that Captain Page is typed at the top of nearly all the title pages, so he was probably stationed in Tientsin. This collection of rare periodicals from Tientsin China is in very good condition. Apparently, the entire publication run for this periodical dated from 1912 till 1938.
