This swords has no visible markings but Im sure it was made in Mexico, most likely in the mid-1800s. A friend collected it in Mexico almost 40 years ago. I have seen many Mexican swords with the grip and guards covered in leather like this. I believe the sword was used up thru the Mexican Revolution. Gorilla soldiers that served with Pancho Villa and other bandit military leaders used whatever arms that were available including many Spanish Colonial swords. They almost always carried their swords on their saddles during the Mexican Revolution. The custom well made leather scabbard is in nice shape, not stiff. It was designed to be attached to the saddle. When attached to the saddle the metal guards and grips would become so hot in the bright sun and extreme heat soldiers could not hold the swords, so the leather covering was a common sense fix. I have owned a dozen like this. The sword is overall 34 the grip is tight. Thats about all I know about it. We described things as best we can but we are not experts in every field. You may know more about the item then we do. You are the judge as to quality and value. This is a very nice example of a beautiful high ranking Japanese Army General Officer Dress Parade Sword that dates from the World War II Era. It is mounted with a lovely machine made blade that measures 29 1/8 inches in length which has survived in very nice original condition with just some minor surface blemishes. The outstanding guard wears an intricately detailed backstrap which includes sakura blossoms and frames a vibrant, colorful hilt with its twisted wire wrap still tightly in place. The plated metal scabbard has some minor flaking as well as a few small tiny dings, nevertheless does remain in very good serviceable condition. Overall measuring 35 3/4 inches in length. This is an extremely nice example of a Japanese D-Guard Army Officer’s Kyu Gunto Sword. It is mounted with a gorgeous well made grooved, unsigned blade which wears a cutting edge that measures 27 3/8 inches in length. The blade remains in near perfect original polished condition boasting its attractive actively wavy temper line. The fabulous large D-guard has now beautifully patined with age and frames a very nice white rayskin covered hilt that remains very healthy and continues to wear its original twisted wire wrap securely in place. The plated metal scabbard remains very nice as well with only some light flaking to the plating at the extreme drag edge and has no dings. Overall measuring 37 5/8 inches in length. It is not in the best of shape however as seen in the pics; the blade is damaged with heavy pitting (no rust remaining though) and the scabbard looks like it has been grounded on parts to remove heavy rust. A very rare and very attractive Polish officer sword model 1921/22. Triple fullered blade is marked on side. The outer side of blade etched with the national motto. Wire wrapped leather grip intact.
