ORIGINAL 1920’S UNITED STATES NAVAL AVIATOR WINGS BADGE INSIGNIA, 2-3/4 INCH SIZE BADGE, PIN-BACK W/ OPEN CATCH. “MEYER METAL & SHIELD”. A naval aviator is a commissioned officer or warrant officer qualified as a crewed aircraft pilot in the United States Navy or United States Marine Corps. United States Coast Guard crewed aircraft pilots are officially designated as “Coast Guard aviators”, although they complete the same undergraduate flight training as Navy and Marine Corps crewed aircraft pilots, and are awarded the same aviation breast insignia. Up for sale are these extraordinarily rare pair of ORIGINAL 1910s/1920s era knee high boots. The leather on these is in excellent condition and the boots are wearable and should have plenty of life left in them. The texture on the leather would indicate that they might be buffalo (or more correctly, Bison) but can’t say for certain as they are not marked as such. The soles are in great shape, however the heels will need to be replaced. You can take them to your favorite cobbler and they will likely charge about the same. I cleaned and conditioned the leather and examined them thoroughly and these are great boots in excellent shape and are ORIGINAL to the time. They are marked on the inside Imported for Armishaw’s – Portland, OR. Armishaw’s was a shoe store located here in Portland from about 1885 to around the 1940s and was the premiere shoe/boot store in the city. There are no other markings that I can find on the boots. Judging from the style of the boot I would date these to somewhere between 1910 to perhaps the early1930s. The size is not marked by I wear a size 9 and these are more like a 10/11. From heel to tip of toe measures 12. There is no return on these boots. The size is not marked but I have given you enough information to make an informed decision regarding size. I believe them to be a 10.5 to perhaps an 11.
LARGE 1-7/8 INCH SIZE 1920’S UNITED STATES ARMY & MARINE CORPS COLONEL EAGLES SHOULDER INSIGNIA, PIN-BACK W/ OPEN “C” CATCH. The insignia for a colonel is a silver eagle which is a stylized representation of the eagle dominating the Great Seal of the United States (which is the coat of arms of the United States). As on the Great Seal, the eagle has a U. Shield superimposed on its chest and is holding an olive branch and bundle of arrows in its talons. However, in simplification of the Great Seal image, the insignia lacks the scroll in the eagle’s mouth and the rosette above its head. On the Great Seal, the olive branch is always clutched in the eagle’s right-side talons, while the bundle of arrows is always clutched in the left-side talons. The head of the eagle faces towards the olive branch, rather than the arrows, advocating peace rather than war. As a result, the head of the eagle always faces towards the viewer’s left. Some colonel eagles from the 1920s to the 1950s faced the arrows, though this is no longer done. The full-sized colonel eagle is exactly two inches in diameter from the tips of each wing. This is a full size USN Aviator’s wing with an EAG appliance added to the center shield of a US Naval Aviator’s wing and thus designating a USMC aviator. This USMC wing style was not officially designated but was certainly worn. This wing is d ie struck but its maker is unknown as it is unmarked! While it is one of the most beautiful such wings I have ever seen, recognize that I’m reluctant to claim it is actually authentic to the era because it just looks too good and lacks the patina I would expect to see on such a wing of that age. I’ve also looked closely at the attachments of the pin bases to the wings in order to ascertain whether they are soldered or electronically welded. There is no bubbling as would be expected as a result of electronic welding. Electronic welding was not available until the late 1950s. The pin retraction is on a 70-80° angle and weighs 14 g m. Please consider viewing my other listings and adding me to your “favorites” list as I will be listing many more interesting and unusual items in the future-particularly wings & badges.
