Set of 3 pre WWII Republic of Latvia orders and medals. Very rare pre WWII Latvian distinguished flying badge surmounted by the Latvian fire cross, or ugunskrusts, connected to a chain holding a hovering eagle. The Latvian Aviation Regiment was established in 1919 out of native Latvian pilots who were part of the Russian Imperial Air Force. Once a peace between Latvia and the Soviet Union was signed in 1920, the independent Latvian air forces continued until overrun by the Soviet Union at the start of the second world war. Latvian pilots continued to fly with the German Luftwaffe ex-patria, wearing Luftwaffe uniforms with a combination of German and Latvian pilot insignias. The Latvian Aviation Regiment (also referred to as the air division) was the primary military aviation force. Active members wore a distinguished flying badge surmounted by the Latvian fire cross, or ugunskrusts, connected to a chain holding a hovering eagle. The badge was in gold for officers, silver for NCO Also. Order of the Three Stars Triju Zvaigznu ordenis. Order of the Three Stars is the highest civilian order awarded for meritorious service to Latvia. It was established in 1924 in remembrance of the founding of Latvia. Its motto is “Per aspera ad astra”, meaning “Through hardships to the stars”. The Order has five ranks and three grades of medals of honour. Also medal of Independence. Austrian Republic Army Mess Kit dated 1937. Exactly the same as Austro-Hungarian Army M1899 mess kits, though this one bears Austrian acceptance stamps of the Republic’s double-headed eagle, HBA, and 1937-the year before Germany’s Anschluss with Austria. Up for sale today is a one of a kind, excellent quality, ! Customized reproduction see: HISTORICAL COPY! Of a Polish army tunic from after WWI. This was of course, before the Polish army had standardized their own production of uniforms and was using leftovers from their former colonial occupiers. One such perfect example was the Polish Army’s use of former German imperial uniforms from wwi, especially by the Polish insurgents in the Greater Poland province during and after the Uprising of Greater Poland. The Polish soldiers went to great lengths to make these uniforms look uniquely Polish and over time, added extensive, sometimes extravagant modifications to set them apart from the Germanic uniform designs. Some of these included the removal of German shoulder straps (and eventually production of uniquely Polish ones), the removal of German Buttons and replacement with uniquely Polish buttons, the removal of the barrel cuffs on the sleeves of the jacket, the removal of the badge cloth collar and replacement with a standing collar. As such, this tunic is a very faithful reproduction of these early Polish uniforms as it started out life as a German tunic before being converted to Polish specifications with many of these features. This tunic after these modifications is also quite similar to interwar Yugoslav tunics and could potentially be modified for use for those re-enactments. The chest size is a 42.
