Here we have a really Cool Early German SA Dagger with a August Bickel Mark on the blade. The Wooden handle show great patina with some small separations of wood near the top. Both emblems fit nicely and appears to have all its enamel. The scabbard also appears to be in good shape. There are a few small dents in the nickel point cover. The original leather strap is still attached. The blade appears to be in fine shape that comes to a nice point. The blade looks like it could buff nicely clean with no pitting. On a personal note; As a child I remember asking my Uncle when he proudly displayed the dagger, Did the man give this to you? Without expression he answered “He had no choice”. Only when I was much older did I understand the full meaning of his answer. This Double Proofed Höller is a fine example, with excellent nickel plated crossguards and a tang nut that does not look to have ever been removed. The guards are nearly perfect. The scabbard shell is straight throughout, with excellent brown paint that shows only a few signs of wearing. Not much, though, and remains nearly 100%intact. The nickel plated mounts are in excellent condition, including the lower ball. The four original dome head screws are in place. The blade is still bright throughout, showing the most modest of age. There are a few runner marks but it is still nearly mint, with all of the original crossgrain. The SA motto is good, with all of the darkening in the lettering, retaining excellent enamel. The blade shoulders perfectly fit the lower crossguard contour. Dagger: 13 1/2 inches. Blade: 8 1/2 inches. History of the SA. The SA or Brown Shirts, were a private political formation which Adolf Hitler and the NSDAP used to maintain order at organized Party meetings and demonstrations. The group was formed in1921, and grew to a huge force of nearly 3,000,000 men by the later 1930’s. To instill esprit de corps, as well as create employment for the Blade City of Solingen, it was decided each SA man would carry a dagger with his Brown Shirt uniform. Huge quantities needed to be produced to accommodate the demand. The dagger initially was produced of hand-fitted nickel mounts with attractive finished wood grip and brown anodized (a bluing process) finished scabbard. The blade was etched with the SA motto, Alles für Deutschland. Examples produced prior to 1935 were stamped with the German sector of the SA group on reverse lower crossguard. Later examples underwent standardization through the RZM ministry. These pieces were produced of plated zinc-base fittings and scabbards were painted brown. Original German Kriegsmarine naval officer’s sword with sheath, either Weimar republic or WWII but reconciled to be more likely produced during the Weimar Republic after researching different design variants of the lion’s head German naval sword and the apparent scarcity of this exact design. Sword has NO OFFENSIVE MARKINGS and is in overall very good condition. Sheath has some light rubbing wear to the leather as well as some minor and superficial white scuffs. Sheath is overall very well intact though the middle and lower brass pieces are missing their staples. Blade is in very nice condition and shows an etched naval motif which remained the same from the WWI imperial period and earlier through the Weimar Republic and WWII. Blade is very well intact but does show some normal tarnishing for it’s age that should be able to be cleaned if the next owner chooses to do so. Blade has 553 serial number as well as ACS with scales mark for the Alcoso maker. Grip has a crack from the upper end to about the middle measuring about 1 1/2 inches. Though the grip is cracked no pieces are falling free or loose at all. Hilt is in excellent condition with anchor and floral motif with lion’s head at the lower end with a green and red jewel for each eye. Hinges on hilt perfectly intact and function as they should. Portapee is present and sturdy and overall in good condition with some obvious fraying. Blade measures 28 1/4 inches long. Entire sword in sheath measures 33 7/8 inches.
