Good looking Marine wears two Army style shooting medal badges, as authorized for the Corps in the’30’s. Also has a Gun Pointer cloth patch on is lower left sleeve and gilt Marine Corps emblems. Reverse of the frame is marked “Made in England”. An interesting home front or sweetheart item from the Banana Wars. I have never seen another like this one. POLAND POLISH ORDER OF THE VIRTUTI MILITARI, 1930s restrike 5th class, silver gilt and enamels. Many were made from original dies. This example has a new ribbon. Super enamels with large and heavy suspension. Copies of VMs were made before the war as replacements for lost government issued numbered type. These copies were made mostly in silver gilt from bronze/brass metal. About 10 different jewelers all over Poland made them. Polish military regulations required that the highest decoration a soldier was awarded be worn at all times even in combat or in training. Most of these original VMs were lost during WWII when Polish soldiers were captured or executed as in the case of the Katyn Forest Massacre where 20,000 Polish officers and enlisted were executed by the Soviets. Photos are seen with bodies still wearing their decorations. The collection offered for sale here consists of many different copies made before and after the war in cheaper design as well as pre WW. In most cases when copies were made by Gontarczyk, Wabinski, Reising, Knedler or Krupski and Matulewic. These copies were made from the same dies, same metal but without the official number on the lower reverse arm of the cross. Only the official government issued VMs were numbered from 1-9,999. There were never any numbered duplicates made. Post war copies were made from new dies and the quality was very inferior as seen on current copies made by Panansiuk. The free listing tool. POLAND POLISH REGIMENTAL CIGARETTE CASE, STERLING with hallmarks. 5.8 ounces, 3 by 4 inches. Warsaw Palace and large 2 by 2.5 inch TOPOR coat of arms. A superb example of Polish jewelry workmanship. An award to an officer on November 4th 1933 by his commanding officer for outstanding performance of military duty which did not merit a decoration. The inscription reads, NAGRODA DOWODCY KWO POLSIE, 4. Some of these cigarette cases were also give out during regimental award ceremonies, returning to the reserves or other events commemorating a major event pertaining to the recipient. Badge is a convex disc with a background of stripes and stars featuring an enlisted mans cap crossed by two Polish farm implements used for fighting at center. ATTACHMENT: Brass backing disc. ARTIFACT: This is a rare set of pilot (could have also been Navy or Marine Corps) goggles by American Optical Company in its original case. The top of the case reads AVIATION GOGGLES AMERICAN OPTICAL COMPANY with the companys winged logo. The bendable bridge of the goggles is in the shape of two interlocking wings. SIZE: Approximately 2-7/8 height and 7-7/8 width and 3-11/16 depth (case). CONSTRUCTION/MATERIALS: Glass lenses, nickel-plated brass hardware, foam rubber seals, cotton strap; velvet-lined leather-wrapped box. ATTACHMENT: Cotton strap and sliding buckle on goggles; snap on case. ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Army Air Forces collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. CONDITION: 6+ (Fine-Very Fine): The hinging edge of the case has entirely separated, so case is opened not by unsnapping the front but by just lifting the cover from the back. ORIGINAL RARE PRE WWII 1930s MARINE AVIATOR PHOTO ALBUM FROM WWII USMC FIGHTER ACE. Bought from veterans estate. This USMC officer was commissioned and completed flight training in 1936. Served as XO of VMF-111 in Samoa, CO of the famous VMF-121 flying off Guadalcanal. Flying F4Fs he shot down 6 Zeros in 2 days in December 1942 earning him a Silver Star. Lt Col in 1943 and commanded MAG-51 and then MGVG-4 flying F4Us off the USS Cape Gloucester. 2 victories over a Judy and Francis in 1945 brought his tally to 8. During the Korean War he was deputy CO of Marine Air Group 21 and again flying combat earned a second Silver Star. Retired in 1959 as a Brig General. This lot consists of his pre WWII photo album. Amazing album from the mid 1930s, a rare look into between the wars Naval / Marine Corps Aviation. 307 photos, many, many aircraft, crashes, cadets, class photos. Some leave photos / girlfriends but the vast majority are great aviation shots. Very well done and captioned.
