1920S-1930S UNITED STATES ARMY CIVIL WAR CAMPAIGN MEDAL, W/ WRAP BROOCH. ASSEMBLED BY GEORGE W. STUDLEY – STRUCK BY DAVIDSON OF PHILADELPHIA. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN. The Civil War Campaign Medal is considered the first campaign service medal of the United States Armed Forces. The decoration was awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces and the Confederate States Armed Forces who had served in the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865. The medal was first authorized in 1905 for the fortieth anniversary of the Civil War’s conclusion. The blue and gray ribbon denotes the respective uniform colors of the U. The Army Civil War Campaign Medal was established by the United States War Department on January 21, 1907, by General Orders Number 12. To qualify, a soldier had to serve between April 15, 1861, and April 9, 1865. The award was intended for both federal and volunteer soldiers. When it was discovered that medal qualifications included the words Active Federal Military Service, the Congressional Act of 1945 had those words removed. Army, Units with Confederate lineage use campaign streamers with the Gray edge up and Units with Union lineage use campaign streamers with the blue edge up. The campaign lettering requires two distinct sets of streamers for each campaign, one set for each side. The closing date was extended to August 20, 1866, date of President Johnson’s Proclamation ending the war. The corresponding Navy Civil War Medal was established on June 27, 1908, by Navy Department. The obverse of the Army Civil War Campaign Medal displayed an engraved image of Abraham Lincoln while the Navy and Marine Corps versions depicted the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia’s battle at Hampton Roads. The medal was designed by Francis D. Millet, a noted sculptor who perished on the RMS Titanic in 1912. The medal was struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Civil War Campaign Medal No. 1 was issued to Maj. Humphrey on May 26, 1909. The medal was originally established as a badge, because Congress would not approve a medal due to the costs involved. The War Department was authorized to create badges, so it did. This interest was due in large part to the fact that several senior military officers were veterans of the Civil War. In 1918, for those who had been cited for gallantry in action, the Silver Citation Star was authorized as a device to the medal. Only six Citation Stars were awarded. There is a direct relationship between U. Campaign streamers and the medal that a campaign represents. The streamer represents the unit’s participation in a campaign and the medal represents an individual’s participation in that campaign U. Army some differences for the U. When a campaign is established, participating unit’s are authorized a streamer and each service member assigned to the unit during that same time is authorized the medal. Sometimes these medals are campaign medals, other times they are service medals, but that streamer/medal relationship normally remains. Although some recipients may have worn some form of the ribbon, the monies necessary to mint and issue the medal were not appropriated by Congress until 1956 91 years after the war ended. It was this act that provided U. Units in the U. Army that trace their heritage and lineage to the Civil War are entitled to display a battle streamer for the Civil War on their flagpoles. This streamer is half blue and half gray, the color theme of the second ribbon design. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you! 1920S-1930S UNITED STATES ARMY C ERTIFICATE OF MERIT MEDAL, W/ WRAP BROOCH. ASSEMBLED BY GEORGE W. STUDLEY – STRUCK BY DAVIDSON OF PHILADELPHIA. R E-BROOCHED DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN. The Certificate of Merit Medal was a military decoration of the United States Army that was issued between the years of 1905 and 1918. The Certificate of Merit Medal replaced the much older Certificate of Merit which was authorized by the United States Congress on March 3, 1847. The system of military awards and decorations presented to members of the United States Military can trace its lineage to the Badge of Military Merit. This military award, established by George Washington, was given in recognition of soldiers who displayed unusual gallantry or extraordinary fidelity. Awarded three times during the Revolutionary War, the Badge of Military Merit was not awarded again. Thus, for more than 50 years the United States Military had no official military decorations. In 1905, a medal was created for those holding a Certificate of Merit and called the Certificate of Merit Medal. This medal was authorized for wear on a United States military uniform. It was always worn following the Medal of Honor, before all campaign medals. The first recipient of the Certificate of Merit Medal was First Lieutenant William B. Baker, who was presented medal No. 1 on 30 December 1907. Baker had received an original Certificate of Merit as a Corporal during the SpanishAmerican War on 13 August 1898. The last act recognized by a Certificate of Merit was May 1918, when Corporal Paul Scaletta made a water rescue of soldiers in dangerous surf condition at Ocean Beach, California. The last soldier to be awarded the Certificate of Merit Medal was George Arrington for his service while a Private with the 24th Infantry Regiment in 1889. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you! The item “U. S. ARMY CERTIFICATE OF MERIT MEDAL WRAP BROOCH GEORGE W. STUDLEY EXAMPLE” is in sale since Wednesday, November 7, 2018. ORIGINAL 1930S UNITED STATES ARMY INDIAN WARS CAMPAIGN MEDAL, FULL WRAP BROOCH W/ OPEN C CATCH. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN IN PHOTO #12. The Indian Campaign Medal is a decoration established by War Department General Orders 12, 1907. The medal was retroactively awarded to any soldier of the U. Army who had participated in the American Indian Wars against the Native Americans between 1865 to 1891. The Indian Campaign Medal was established by War Department General Orders 12 in 1907. It was created at the same time as the Civil War Campaign Medal. The initial ribbon was all red; however, two black stripes were added in December 1917 because of the similarity to a ribbon used by the French for the French Legion of Honor. Campaign streamers of the same design as the service ribbon are authorised for display by units receiving campaign credit participation for Indian Wars as early as 1790. The inscriptions for streamers displayed on the organizational flag will be as indicated in the unit’s lineage and honours. The inscriptions for the 14 streamers displayed on the Army flag are listed in AR 840-10 and AR 600-8-22. The Code of Federal Regulations declares service in the following campaigns as requirements for award of the Indian Campaign Medal. Southern Oregon, Idaho, northern California, and Nevada between 1865 and 1868. Against the Comanches and confederate tribes in Kansas, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and Indian Territory between 1867 and 1875. Modoc War between 1872 and 1873. Against the Apaches in Arizona in 1873. Against the Northern Cheyennes and Sioux between 1876 and 1877. Nez Perce War in 1877. Bannock War in 1878. Against the Northern Cheyennes between 1878 and 1879. Against the Sheep-Eaters, Piutes, and Bannocks between June and October, 1879. Against the Utes in Colorado and Utah between September 1879 and November 1880. Against the Apaches in Arizona and New Mexico between 1885 and 1886. Against the Sioux in South Dakota between November 1890 and January 1891. Against hostile Indians in any other action in which United States troops were killed or wounded between 1865 and 1891. The Code of Federal Regulations describes the medal as follows. The medal of bronze is 114 inches in diameter. On the obverse is a mounted Indian facing sinister, wearing a war bonnet, and carrying a spear in his right hand. Above the horseman are the words Indian Wars, and below, on either side of a buffalo skull, the circle is completed by arrowheads, conventionally arranged. On the reverse is a trophy, composed of an eagle perched on a cannon supported by crossed flags, rifles, an Indian shield, spear, and quiver of arrows, a Cuban machete, and a Sulu kriss. Below the trophy are the words For Service. The whole is surrounded by a circle composed of the words United States Army in the upper half and thirteen stars in the lower half. The medal is suspended by a ring from a silk moire ribbon 138inches in length and 138 inches in width composed of a red stripe (14 inch), black stripe (316 inch), red band (12inch), black stripe (316 inch), and red stripe (14 inch). The Indian Campaign Medal was issued as a one-time decoration only and there were no devices or service stars authorized for those who had participated in multiple actions. The only attachment authorized to the medal was the silver citation star, awarded for meritorious or heroic conduct. The silver citation star was the predecessor of the Silver Star and was awarded to eleven soldiers between 1865 and 1891. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you! TRIBUTE TO THOSE THAT SERVED AND DIED. NEW YORK NATIONAL GUARD. What is a “ROLL OF HONOR “? It is a list of those who have died in war for their country, especially those from a particular locality or organization. On July 6, 1917, the city of Spartanburg, S. Government nearly 2,000 acres of land west of the city for an Army training camp. After a rapid construction project, the first troops arrived at Camp Wadsworth that fall. From 1917 to 1919, Camp Wadsworth served as one of America’s premier army mobilization centers. Men from all over the country New York National Guardsmen, Wisconsin recruits, the Slavic Legion of Eastern European immigrants all came to call Spartanburg home temporarily. The camp was to have a capacity of about 56,000 officers and enlisted men that would become the 27th U. By the time Wadsworth was closed on March 25, 1919, an estimated 105,000 soldiers had trained for World War I service there. 27TH DIVISION: The New York State National Guard Division was officially designated the 27th Infantry Division on July 20th, 1917. The division, which initially had nine infantry regiments grouped into three brigades was squared or reorganized into a more simplified four-regiment structure within two brigades. Some regiments were dropped from the unit, while others were renamed and enlarged. The 27th Division was eventually made up of the 53rd Infantry Brigade, consisting of the 105th and 106th Infantry Regiments, and the 54th Infantry Brigade, consisting of the 107th and 108th Infantry Regiments. The 52nd Field Artillery Brigade, which was made up of the 104th, 105th, and 106th Field Artillery Regiments and the 102nd Trench Mortar Battery was assigned as the divisional artillery, though once in Europe it never served with the 27th Division. The initial effective strength of the 27th Division was 991 officers and 27,114 enlisted men. After training at Camp Wadsworth, Spartanburg, S. The 27th was initially stationed in the East Poperinghe Line, and participated in actions at Dickebusch Lake and Vierstratt Ridge during the late summer of 1918, and then in September the struggle to break the formidable German defenses of the Hindenburg Line. On September 25th, the division participated in the Somme Offensive and provided a break through of the Hindenburg Line itself forcing the Germans into general retreat. After a final confrontation with the retreating Germans at the Le Selle River the Armistice ended the fighting and the division was sent home in February of 1919, to be mustered out several months later. In the early actions the 27th Division sustained 185 killed 1,086 wounded, and 65 who later died of their wounds. During the Somme offensive and subsequent operations the 27th lost an additional 1,237 killed, 5,328 wounded, and 308 who later died of their wounds for a total of 8,209 assorted casualties throughout the course of the war. 52nd Field Artillery Brigade 106th Field Artillery Regiment: formerly 3rd Regiment, Field Artillery, and detachments from the 1st, 71st, and 74th Regiments, Infantry, New York National Guard.
