A fantastic group of original items, formerly the property of US Marine Corps Captain Thomas Howard Bruce, for service during WW II, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War, starting as an enlisted man and then rising to captain. Ensemble consists of the following items. Bruce’s framed original medal group, consisting of a legion of Merit with V and Navy Commendation Medal with V, among 14 framed medals (all unnamed as issued). A named, engraved officers Mameluke sword. Numerous photos, clippings, and memorabilia. A large collection of official paperwork and documents, including citations for valor awards, promotion documents, large and small photos, orders, and a bonanza of other miscellaneous paperwork and correspondence. Bruce received his Commendation Ribbon (later the medal when issued) with a V for valor for manning a heavy machine gun on the light cruiser U. Louis during kamikaze attacks of Leyte and Okinawa. His V for valor on the Legion of Merit medal was for service in Vietnams An Hua Province, where he established a supply base and rendered aid to wounded Marines while under rocket and mortar attack. The Marine Corps officers’ sword, overall length 36.75, is a high quality example with a German made blade marked Conqueror, featuring beautiful etched engraved panels with Capt. Bruces name in a polished metal scabbard with gilt fittings. All are in excellent condition. A very desirable Marine Corps group covering the major conflicts of the mid-twentieth century. An extremely rare example of the Nicaraguan Medal of Distinction. This medal was the second highest of four decorations that were awarded by the government of Nicaragua to US Navy and Marine Corps personnel for service in that country in the late 1920s and early 1930s. These decorations were presented in very limited numbers and rarely come on the market. I have seen a several examples of the Medal for Merit offered for sale over the years but have never seen any of the other decorations offered in a public sale. The Medal of Distinction offered here is marked 14k (as shown in the photo) but does not have any other marking, so the actual maker is unknown. The silk ribbon is authentic and correct for the medal but due to its age it cant be fitted to the medal ring without splitting. The two documents shown are ones that I copied from USMC correspondence files in the US National Archives in Washington and have not been previously published. This lot includes everything seen in the photos including postcards, photos, Dog tags, Buckles, Patches, Pins, Medals, USMC Cup & Spoon, Mr. Hahn’s personal rubber stamp, his journal accompanied w/ original military documentation regarding his promotion. Vintage 1927 Nicaragua Managua US Marine Aviators Sun Glasses Goggles USMC. From the Estate of a US Marine Aviator who served in Nicaragua during 1927 to 1930. The frames are made of Bakelite and the lenses are Amber Glass. The wire rims have a leather covering over them. They are in excellent condition with only slight discoloration in the leather behind the ears. The Glass lenses are removable as there is an aluminum bracket on the top that appears if unhooked will release the lenses. I did not try to do this however. Canvas case is also in excellent condition. No rust on the snaps. Any questions please ask! I tried them on and they fit very snugly to the eyes. 5.75 inches end hinge screw to end hinge screw. For your consideration is this scarce, 1920’s Era United States Marine Corps Enlisted Alpha Service Cover. It’s being offered by us, as found, uncleaned. The leather band, buttons, and leather bill are all in very good condition. The included EGA is original to the period and appears original to the cover as well. The inside leather band is in very good condition, but retains approximately half the original stitching, which is very common with covers this old. There is also a moth bite on the top about the size of a pin head. This is a very scarce, transitional period cover, and is one of the nicer examples we’ve seen for sale. Overall, this cover is a true survivor, and if you’re looking for a museum piece or want to top off a period uniform, this fantastically preserved piece has no issues, and is ready to be displayed proudly. Size is 7 1/4. Note – the side buttons are secured using pins as apposed to the later screw in button system.
